Golf in Zug?

Hi all -

Can anyone recommend a good place to golf in Zug? We are flying over to Switzerland tomorrow as I have an Interview with a company in Zug. My husband is looking to check out the golfing scene.

Also - one more thing - how many months per year to the golf course operate? I'm assuming they close Nov - March because of snow? Is that correct?

The only one near Zug I know of is this one:

Rotkreuz is about 10 minutes drive from Zug

Re: Golf in Zug?

Great. Will have a look. Tks. And the golf season? I supposed probably runs March through to November. Would that be an accurate assumption?

Re: Golf in Zug?

Yikes! Is it really expensive? I wonder what the average cost of a round would be.......Actually, would actually my husband will probably be looking to become a member somewhere. Maybe I should convince him to take up fishing or cycling.

Re: Golf in Zug?

I heard you have to take exams and stuff before they let you on the green. Visitors may be exempt from such rules if they are already a member somewhere else. But I know nothing about golf, so maybe someone who actually does know something will turn up and add to this thread

Re: Golf in Zug?

The course linked above is actually very nice for being a public course. They bumped the fee to 85CHF this year, but it's still very cheap. You'll never get away with less than 80 and expect to pay up to 140 for really nice courses. There are about 85 courses in total in CH and most of them are private so there isn't a ton to choose from, but in general courses are rather nice here.

You will need to have an official handicap of <36 to get on any course and either be a member if a club or a regional association like the USGA etc. Without your HCP and membership cards you won't get on any course, unless you know how to run your mouth Once you are in their datasystem, you can play without any questions asked.

Check this link out as well... click on any course you want to play on the map. http://www.swissgolfnetwork.ch/. Pretty close to Zug you'll find Schönenberg, which is super nice but often fully booked.

Re: Golf in Zug?

FYI... I'm paying the annual fee for a USGA membership every year which is something like 25 bucks. That gives you the official HCP card and that's all you need really. Game on!

Thank you Swede. This information is very helpful. It sounds like you play a lot of golf. In general, are memberships very expensive to buy?

Re: Golf in Zug?

Hi

I'm no golfer myself, but through my activities in the International Men's Club of Zug, I've met several. I was recently involved in organizing some of the *advertising* around a recent charity pro-am at Holzhäusern which the club put on.

Holzhäusern seems to be run/owned by Migros - a large Swiss retailer known for their low prices. I understand that the golf course is probably among the most reasonably priced around.

If you're still interested, let me know and I'll try and hook you up with some English-speaking golfers who go there.

Re: Golf in Zug?

Thanks David. I will definitely keep this in mind....although given it's Oct 30 I suspect the golf courses will be closing soon for the winter season. Looks like I'll have to take up snowboarding.

I just took a look at the web site for Holzhauzern www.golfpark-holzhaeusern.ch and I couldn't see anywhere that it actually says that they are closed for the winter months. It just says that you cannot play on the course until the morning frost has cleared and as the weather is pretty mild right now that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Obviously when the snow does come I'm pretty sure it will be closed but this won't be for a while yet.

It gives a telephone number that you can call to get daily information. 041 799 70 11.

Happy golfing.

Re: Golf in Zug?

That is good to know..thank you. Speaking of snow, when I was in Zug last month, the taxi driver actually told me that Zug doesn't get much snow, only up in the mountains. I could very well have misunderstood him because this doesn't seem likely.....or is it?

Re: Golf in Zug?

Little late this response, but Holzhausern is know by people in the trade as the Golf Factory. (I am an english pro working over here).

It is one of a few Migros courses, if you just want a round every few months then its ok, but getting times can be difficult.

There are many pros and cons to membership at different places but in comparision to other countries memberships and green fees can be expensive due to land prices and wages.

Is anyone needs any info on where to play or other golf questions let me know

Russell
