Wanted - Rhine swimming companion(s)

I'm new to Basel and can't wait to get into the Rhine. But I'm just a little too nervous to do so on my own. I'm a strong swimmer and have a wetsuit, so I'm not worried about the temperature or open water swimming. But I've never swum in such a strong current before and I'm not sure if there are certain rules to follow.

Is there anyone out there that I could join for a dip?

Re: Wanted - Rhine swimming companion(s)

A friend of mine had his first Rhein swimming of the year today. 18 degrees and bit rain. I prefer to swim around the Birskopf island (but only at summertime) because you don`t have a strong flow there.

This map shows you the swimmingareas

If you like to swimm with other pepole, we have the Rheinschwimmen every year in Basel

Re: Wanted - Rhine swimming companion(s)

Thank you Sbine. Looks like I'm on holiday when the Rheinschwimmen is on in August

Thanks for the map. Perhaps I just need to get on and get in. I bet it was beautiful in the rain - best way to calm down this terrible hay fever.

Maybe you can get in contact with other swimmers at the Rhybadhüsli.

Oh dear - it would help if I spelt Rhein correctly. Its the hay fever, I can hardly see my eyes are so swollen!

Seems I've only ever swam in the dangerous zones One word of warning: Do not swim in the Rhein after a heavy bout of rain. A lot of people end up getting a fungal skin infection due to the rain water washing down a load of manky stuff from the hills. One of my friends picked up a lovely infection a couple of years back.

Re: Wanted - Rhine swimming companion(s)

Just get straight in. My first dip in the Rhine was fully clothed, courtesy of some rather hilarious friends. I wouldn't worry about a wetsuit, just start small, there are plenty of ladders out of the water, so just relax and go with the current.

Never wear a Rhinebag round your neck though.

Re: Wanted - Rhine swimming companion(s)

The current last week was a lot stronger than average, maybe due to snow melting.

It will probably get a bit slower and warmer over the next weeks, and more conducive to a relaxed after-work swim

Also a nice place near Basel for relaxing at the Rhein are the "Isteiner Schwellen". Sorry I can not find an English article about it. :-/

don't need a wet suit but probably worth getting some swim shoes so you don't cut your feet getting in/out.

Please be careful and carry a wooden stick. I hear there is a Loch Ness type monster than pulls people down. Hit it with your stick if it grabs your feet lol
