Re: Gyms in Zurich

I love David Gym. They have all the equipment to train as hardcore as you need to.... Plenty of free weights, power/squat racks, benches, and a host of very good quality machines.

All the BIG BIG dudes train there, (there are several high level amateurs and even some pro bodybuilders there... both men and women competitors) but also you get normal everyday people of all ages as just trying to stay fit.

To top it off, they have a bunch of classes. I cannot list them all off hand, but they have several martial arts such as Kickboxing & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, dance aerobic stuff, etc, etc.

http://www.davidgym.ch/

I hope this helps somebody...

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Does anyone go to a Zürich gym with rowing machines?

Also, I'm kind of down on training in basement gyms - I like
to see some daylight...

Thanks,
Paul.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

You may want to check out Schumacher in Zürich-Stettbach. They have plenty of light and even remove the roof in the summer. They have rowing machines as far as I remember.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Thanks, I'm central and hoping to survive without a car, so this is maybe outside my range. It does seem a good place from the website though.

Paul.

p.s. Today's headlines that appear when googling 'Stettbach' are unfortunately not a good advert for this area...

it is only 2 stops from HB with train, and the gym is 5 min walk from stettbach train station.

If you're near Central, why not try Active Fitness right there? Trial training is free.

OK thanks for the further information. Still getting used to the fact that public transport is so ultra-efficient. I might give it a try,
Paul.

This does look well-placed. I have a feeling that I walked past it and it was a basement though (or at least no obvious windows going to a gym). Any idea if it has any rowing machines or natural light?
Thanks,
Paul.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Maybe of general interest for people who come to this thread - Holmes Place offer a one-week trial membership, cost CHF 75, before commitment to a full year's membership. The member services staff were pleasantly no-pressure, and graceful when I didn't go ahead with a year's membership - a nice surprise since some reports had suggested that they are a hardnosed bunch.

There's nothing there that you can't get at Active Fitness - well there's a roof that opens in the summer, and a small outdoor patio area where it's possible to take bikes and rowing machines. Not enough to justify the price differential IMO.

Isn't Holmes more than twice the cost of Activ?

Holmes Place had a special Fassnacht offer when I was there - CHF 105 new member fee, and CHF 122 per month. I only got brief verbal details from Activ (I get the tour in a few days) but I think it's CHF 770 per year. So yes, HP is about double.

Still readjusting to some of Swiss life - both gyms told me that if I wanted to cancel membership within one year, I would need to (a) show proof that I had moved at least 30km away from Zürich, or (b) produce a doctor's certificate saying I was unable to train. Makes it feel less like a gym than a financial ball-and-chain.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for regular pilates and kickboxing classes and don't necessarily need the workout machines. I live in Wiedikon, Zurich. Any suggestions where I can enroll for an inexpensive class?

Thanks!
Olga

Re: Gyms in Zurich

out side of town in Meilen is Fitzone.ch

on 3 floors with windows looking over the lake (very nice when on a running machine to watch the suneset)
- free, easy parking
- weights room
- sauna, plunge bath
- free towels
- yoga, spinning classes etc
- creche
- rowing machines, running, that funny skating one
- you get a key which remembers your programme which you upload all your sessions on too see progress
- staff super friendly, speak all languages and seem to remember everyones names even if you have been naughty and not been for a while

- not the cheapest 800-1200 per year but health insurance does give 200Chuffs back

on the floors above are unrelated but associated, chinese medicine clinic, laser, beauty studios and hairdresser. Haven't been in these myself but they all look very new and equipped.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

they change the price on a monthly basis, depending on the deal. I pay too much, i I have friends who go and pay about 50chf less a month. Go in with the information from another gym and you should be able to bring the quoted price down significantly.
I would not recommend joining Holmes Place. I only go because the trainer I have used for along time is there... but if he ever left I would be gone in a second. I also had to switch from nights to mornings because it was too busy and now 6.30am is getting busy too. All my friends use Migors and when I go with them I think it is much better deal.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Hi,

Im looking for a gym in Zurich near Bellevue (I live on Muhlebach).

I will be in Zurich for about another 7 weeks. Could anyone help out with information on the closest gym, price and if I will have to pay for each and every visit or should I be able to some kind of deal for my time here?

I would like a gym with modern features (pool, sauna etc) but price is also an important factor.

Thanks!
Dan.

Call them up to find out more. They have a pool and sauna.

As a newbie I think you need at least 10 posts or so until the THANKS / GROAN buttons appear.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

As I'm about to make my move to the centre again (at last...), I'll have to change gyms as well. Have been training at West side Fitness for the past year and was very happy with that but now I need something closer to Bellevue. Does anybody have any experience with Arena 225? I'm just looking for a no nonsense, basic gym with good free weights equipment and, preferably, not too overcrowded after work.
