I've seen a wide mix of 20s through 40s. I'm 38 and have never felt like an old guy there!

Hi
I train at Holmes Place - it is an AMAZING gym! The equipment is high spec, it has a good free weights area and in the summer there is an outdoor training area & the roof opens in the gym
I would recommend popping in for a look around at least. The staff are great (& all speak English as the majority of their members are X-Pats).

Re: Gyms in Zurich

I'll throw in my reccomendation for David Gym. I've been a member since November and have been very impressed. It all depends on what you are looking for in a gym, but David Gym is more focused on weightlifting than cardio. The cardio area is much smaller and features about 6 bikes, 10 treadmills and some other machines (ellipticals, rowing, etc.), but the weight area is huge and great. Basically anything you can image is there, including squat racks, Olympic lifts etc. There is also the option to try out combat sports (i.e. jiu-jitsu, MMA stuff etc. and a ton of fitness classes that range from spinning to yoga inspired classes). The price is steeper than others (ballpark about 1000 CHF for a year membership), but they have various discounts and with some health insurance plans you can claim membership at a gym.The place is really only super busy around 5-7 PM and even then you can easily work around because of built in redundancy. Also, the hours are good, from 6 AM to 10 PM weekdays and 9 AM to 6 PM on weekends. You receive 4 free fitness consults with that membership fee and the staff are generally nice, helpful and can speak English if necessary.

There are loads of huge guys in the gym, but most are gentle giants and are friendly enough. There are also lots of folks there just to get in shape or stay fit, not necessarily compete in body building championships.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Has anyone experienced Personal training either at Fitnesspark or Holmes Place. I would sign up in one of those gyms but would be interested in the quality of personal training there....

No it is indeed for Zürich. But I haven't moved there yet. I'm just getting some information about it. Fitnesspark is tempting but I'm not sure their personal trainers are as good....

Re: Gyms in Zurich

I have to say, I'm really dissapoited about gyms in Zurich (I'm loving the city but the gyms... I think I'll get fat in here).

Everybody told me Holmes Place was the best one and its really bad compared to the Holmes Places gyms I saw in Spain. It looks like Swiss people d'not really like gyms because I find them quite expensive to what they offer.

If you want to see a real amazing gym go to Barcelona, 02, Holmes Place, Arsenal, Metropolitan... snif snif... I miss my city.

Moreover I couldn't find a gym with swimming pool, any advise!?

Hello Friends,

I am looking for a fitness club, that has good and is well maintained. From this forum, one club that came up near my area Stettbach was Schumacher Sportcenter (http://www.sfcs.ch) . Has anyone worked out at this center? Any reviews about this club? How good or bad it is ?

Thanks.

Thanks! Sounds good.

David's Gym is only ten minutes by feet, so I'm gonna try this gym next month. I'm new in Zürich and I have a one month membership for Silhouette Altstetten.

A couple of things I don't like there:
- no olympic lifts
- hardly any equipment to train your back properly
- a lot of windows widely opened, it was rainy and the temperature was below 10 degrees Celsius outside, and people were exercising in a t-shirt next to opened windows, can't be any good
- lots and lots of windows, but hardly any mirrors

I just went to Davids today to try out the bodypump as you can buy blocks of sessions instead of a yearly abo (although at nearly FOUR times the price I used to pay at the local sports centre in the UK, gotta love those swiss prices). It looks a really nice place, it's huge and the staff seemed very friendly, the class was pretty good too and after it I was all ready to buy a block of sessions, until they mentioned the 149 chuff joining fee, 'fraid that just sticks in my craw. The search for a pay per session body pump and/or attack class goes on.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

I use a gym in Widnau, part of a triumvirate of gym´s.
The staff are friendly and know how to use the modern machines, it is very clean and light and as it is on the fifth floor the view down the Rhine valley is breathtaking.
The only problem I have is that the machines are designed for people with a more standard body.
I do not fit in a lot of them and would have to contort myself in a comical way also you can only pack around 240-odd lbs so most are maxed out and break pretty easy.
But apart from that it is 800 Chuffs p.a. and I can hope for a refund from thne Krankenkasse at the end of the year.
We shall see.

I went to Davids for a bodycombat class and it was good. Thanks for the tip on the joining fee, I wasn't aware of that. Think I'll stick with pay as you go then!

Not sure if this is any use to you, but I'm a member of Nordfit in Oerlikon (who unfortunately don't have Bodycombat classes) but they do have Bodypump. They are 20CHF for one class (I think Davids was 30CHF) or you can buy a block and get a class free.
This user would like to thank loulou82 for this useful post:

Another example of Swiss inflexibility driving away a customer i'm afraid. I now use the free gym at my office.
I encountered this in other countries too... there must be more people 'accepting' it than walking away and that's why they keep those abusing rules.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Hello,

I will be moving to Zurich in less than a month and I am a huge gym enthusiast.
I am from London where I go to Esporta.
I am looking for a place where they have a lot of classes : Les Mills, Spinning, Boxercise...

I am not very interested in weightlifting - I do some.
But classes are a must.

Any idea in a central area? Ideally, I'll be leaving centrally and working near Talstrasse in kreis 1.

Are there chains in Zurich?

I have searched the web and I found that few gyms have extensive class programmes.

Or another option would be to find a kind of British Military fitness operating near the city centre.

Does this exist?

Cheers,

J

PS : I am a 28yo male and if you are into squash, I am also interested.
