as in any other dancing activity is funny to notice that most women do it because of the beauty of the dance and most men do it for the beauty of the woman
or most women get into dancing for the beauty of the dance, and men get in for the beauty of the woman. But in the higher level courses you'll find most women stay because they secretly fancy one of the guys and the guys are there because they've realised dancing is fun

Well, most Latin dances are basically sex on your feet with your clothes on. Reminds me of the episode in Simpsons when they go to Brazil.

"We are developing a new dance, Il Penetrada, it'll make sex look like church."

well as they say

Salsa is flirting
Merengue is foreplay
Bachata is sex

And yes, latin dances ( the brazilian too ) are designed with that in mind.

It is funny when you see people here who want to do latin dances but don't want the sexy component of it.

I'm watching the fifth series of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing (love it lots!) and wondered if there was any possibilty to learn ballroom dancing in the Zürich area.

I know there are a number of dancers on the forum - anyone know of any classes?

Also got to work on the hubby to get him motivated and that's going to be the toughy...
Sorry for the super late reply. I haven't been here for a while. But there are several nice places for ballroom dancing in Zurich. Migors has a Dance Academy almost next to Oerlikon that's got decent group classes. Otherwise, you can also try Dancers. This place is further away from the city center, but they sometimes have group lessons taught in English (if Philip is teaching, then it's in English...) There are other teachers who will give private lessons in English, but for group classes, this is more limited. Anyways, send me a PM if you want more specific information. Good luck and dancing is SUPER fun

Re: Ballroom dancing (Zürich area)

It's sooo great to see some info here, than you guys! I'm a dance lover from China. Soon (in probably Oct.) I will have a job rotation to Zurich for half year, so now I'm looking for some dance activities via internet. So I'm very happy to see these above that there are so many professional dancers here.

Anyway, if I can really go there, hope to see you!

I'm now learning standard dance, but basically Waltz...since my teacher teach a lot Waltz. but somehow I can dance a little other dances. I used to practise latin dances, mainly rumba and chachacha, samba is not so good . I also like ballet but for this I'm only a beginner...I also like salsa, marengue, bachata, Agentina Tango....seems I become a big fun now... I just like dance!

I really really hope to join some activities in Zurich when I live there! And hope there are some balls which I can find a partner to dance with...at least for one song. You can find me via Private Message

Nice to see you!

I'm not much into the Latin dances myself so can't comment, but otherwise my take is that dances are what you want them to be and no less and no more. If you want to see sex in them, you will find plenty of sex in them. I don't want to cite Freud but if you want to you'll find no end to explicit sexual symbolism in tying a shoelace or buying a tram ticket, if only you want to see it. Sex is something that happens in the brain first and foremost and you can control, and condition your brain to see or not see sex as you wish.

I think you often only get out what you project in.

One of the dances I'm into myseld quite a bit is Argentine tango and besides the dance I've also picked up quite a bit on the history and the culture etc and the more I learn the more I realise that nobody really has a clue. There is a school of thought, for example, that teaches that tango (or predecessor thereof) evolved in the brothels of Buenos Aires in the late 19th Century. Another school of thought ties the dance to the slaves and African immigrants and draws some rather strenuous parallels to indigenous African dances. There is a third school of thought that says both are wishful thinking but there is factually no primary evidence or reliable contempoarry source that backs either up. So the story is, believe what you want.

Re: Ballroom dancing (Zürich area)

If finding a partner (or dragging a hubby along) is a problem, I'd suggest
an alternative to ballroom: the various folk dance traditions. No partners
needed - and, in fact, most groups I know of in Switzerland are very open to newcomers. Also a good way to meet people, including those of the Swiss persuasion (which, to judge by EF posts, can be a problem for some folks, esp. if they are newly arrived here). Zürich alone has groups for Israeli, Balkan, Finnish, Argentinian, Greek, Irish, Czech-Slovak, Scottish - as well as many than do mixed problems. Just about any night of the week, somewhere.

I have a long list of addresses/contact persons, so send me a private message if you want to know more!

Whew, that was some typo! I meant to write "as well as many that do mixed programs..." meaning dances from a variety of folk traditions. Wonder what neural pathways my fingers were walking down...

Re: Ballroom dancing (Zürich area)

Hello All,

I live in Canada and will be in Zurich on a business trip accompanied by my fiance. We will arrive to Zurich on a flight that will land on Monday 19 October at 7:15 PM and we will depart on a flight back to Canada on Saturday 24 October at 12:50 in the afternoon.

We would like to dance ballroom during our stay in Zurich. I appreciate letting me know the places, addresses and the time tables of the centres that offer ballroom dances during our stay in Zurich. You may contact me by sending an email to me at:

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,
Samy El-Hennawey

Re: Ballroom dancing (Zürich area) - Modern Jive / Ceroc

Hi JayDee

Great to hear that more Modern Jivers (Ceroc, Le Jive etc) are coming to Zurich. I've been dancing Modern Jive in the UK for years and been looking for people and places to dance here in Zurich.
