I too often refer to the NHS site for good, impartial information.
From your attached article, one point in particular stood out for me: 'the lower your muscle mass, the slower your metabolism', which I had not been aware of.

As for replacing sugar with alternatives - why? Surely it's better by far to cut out or reduce all the uncontrolled sugars in shop-bought pre-prepared foods than to focus on the very small amount of sugar you'd actually be able to replace in your own intake? | | | | | I agree with this. I think moderation is the key really.

a-ha (as they say in Despicable Me - "Light Bulb"...) I think you are right! I don't drink coffee so I don't pay attention to the nuances, and in my household sugar usually comes in the granular and not cube form, so saying just 1 for sugar didn't register |

I'm currently arguing with my private fitness coach, who want me to do the new fast diet, where you starve for two days and then eat everything you want the third one. He looked aghast when I asked him for scientific studies proving such a diet works long time... |

We got told that by our gym teacher back in 1996. Why he then chose to make a class made up exclusively of teenage girls mostly do aerobic exercise of the kind that involved jumping up and down is, of course, a TOTAL mystery to me. But that's a different story entirely.
What is so hard to believe about someone not drinking/not smoking/avoiding things that are bad for you? Isn't it odd that the unhealthy behaviour is the accepted norm while telling people you don't drink, thank you very much, elicits all sorts of negative reactions. You can drink all you want, really, no problem, just don't puke on my shoes.

| | | | | not sure if that is directed at me, but if it is, it is because I might then think that the person who only eats sticks and carrots and is so disciplined to not indulge in something that might be "bad" isn't any fun... I guess I am prejudiced in that way.
And I can drink without having to puke on your or anyone else's shoes. Unless you make me drink more than 2 Maß at Oktoberfest in a 4 hour period of time. Then I might have a problem. Note, I have never drunk more than 2 Maß during a 4 hour period of time. Well, at least not since being a proper adult...beers weren't measured in Maß form in grad school so I couldn't say for sure on that one | The following 5 users would like to thank drmom for this useful post: | |

Tonight they've been playing with their toy cars, Lego and read from some books.

The greater the mass, the higher the metabolic rate.
That ruins a few excuses, doesn't it.
Although this new study today suggests there could be a slow metabolism due to mutated DNA in some obese people.

So you agree that fat cells require energy too?
So therefore someone with more fat cells than someone else, with everything else being equal, will burn more energy.
Therefore total mass is valid.

You are aware Tom that the fat cells we have effectively remains constants -but the size of them grows - or something along those lines. If I get time I'll dig the information out.
It is one of the reasons liposuction is such a bad idea.
Anyway - as mentioned before, when it comes to walk/running, the approximate calorie burn is 1 cal per kg per km. If you are a fatty chub chub it will take more energy to walk to the shops to buy a bar of chocolate than it would for a skinny person.
Which is why the fat person can have the chocolate and the skinny one a bottle of water
