Re: Skiing in mid to late may

I haven't skied Zermatt yet, but my husband volunteers in an adaptive program for skiers in Maine....so if you come over, let me know and he'd love an excuse to go out to play in Zermatt while I work :-)

For th Doberman, you will need to have him inoculated against rabies and get a pet passport for him. This takes a minimum of 6 months I think. However for such a trip (vacation) I would really wonder if the journey is wise. He may have to go in the hold - Not sure if service dogs are allowed in the cabin long haul....you would need to confirm that direct with the airline. Unless he's a seasoned flyer, the long trip could be pretty stress for him (even if in the cabin)

Not sure what will be open, but Zermatt is one of the few places where the lift operators are used to adaptive skiers. My wife did her adaptive instructor training there, and it's the favoured venue for such training run by BASI.

Skiing in mid- to late May - adaptive skier

Hi there - Welcome to the Forum
The Swiss idea of 'spontaneous' is making plans about three weeks ahead (and this is for an invitation to a cup of coffee).

Switzerland is basically not a disability friendly country. Things are improving but I've said before that the main reason that the Swiss are so good at the longer distances in wheelchair racing, is because they are used to racing from one WC suitable for wheelchairs to the next! There are hills all over the place. Some new trains have wide doorways and are roll-in, roll-off. Some trains have narrow doorways and narrow steps. Some trains have broad doorways but stop at stations where descending from the carriage is training for coming down from the Matterhorn! Restaurants often have steps all over the place and ramps tend to be steep.

There are lots of rules regarding dogs and bringing them into the country involves about three hundred of them. I'm not trying to put you off but forewarned is forearmed. Check out 'Meloncollie' on here for excellent dog advice and loads of tips.

Since you say you speak some German, I suggest you take a look at this site - Plusport is the 'Home' of Disabilty Sport in Switzerland and has links to the Swiss Paralympic folk who will have far more detailed information than we have on here. Try under 'Leichtathletic' for handbike stuff. Swiss Skiing is clear. I would e-mail them and ask for suggestions and advice. The national teams travel a lot for training and competition and will know all the tricks of the trade and the best places for you to enjoy your sport.

Be prepared for this sort of thing... I asked at the cash desk of an indoor swimming pool, if the cashier could take care of a perfectly behaved Guide Dog, while the swimmer, who is blind, took part in a training session in my group. The reply - 'We cannot start doing that or everyone would be asking. If the lady comes by car, she could leave the dog in the car...'

Good luck in your plan making.
