Cycling blow out - possible causes?

Was steaming towards my record time for my ride home last, when I suffered a pretty impressive blow-out; sounded like a 1st August fire cracker, 3 cm split in my tyre and god only knows what state my inner tube is in. Wasn't next to the rim, so not a pinching effect, but was right in the middle of the tyre. Pressure was around 90 - 100 PSI I reckon, so I don't think that's the problem, and I was on a slight uphill, so no rim overheating from braking. Could a blow-out from inside do this much damage, or do you think I ran over a piece of glass/metal; there was no obvious debris in the road?

My first guess would be glass, tbh. What does the split in the inner tube look like? If it's long and clean, then definitely glass or something similar. If it's ragged with lacy edges, you might have got some kind of solvent on it that's eaten through the rubber.

You should seriously consider the possibility that you are a target for disgruntled beamer drivers.

Have you checked for a trail of thumb tacks?

If it's not a pinch flat (unlikely if the tyres were at a decent pressure as you mentioned and not due to perhaps hitting a big pothole), then almost certain to be an external object. When you take the tyre off, have a good look at the inside to make sure there is nothing in there before putting a new inner tube in.

Edit: Sorry, misread the original post - yep, got to be something you ran over to rip a hole in the tyre.

What tyres do you use? Do they have a puncture protection strip?

The tyre's shredded, I'll have to replace it.

Sounds like glass or metal or somethign else sharp. But also check that the rim tape is covering all spokes in the wheel. Sometimes a spoke can puncture the inner tube if the rim tape is not correctly installed. Though doesn't sound like thats the case here.

Rim overheating. I just read up on it on a bike forum. I had no idea it could cause a blow-out - apparently rim gets so hot it softens/melts the tyre or bead and if its a loose fitting rim, the tyre can pop off and tube blows, presumably high pressure is needed too. However, the forum contributors also emphasized it is very rare and even if you *try* to make it happen over a very long steep descent - e.g. by braking hard for a few kms down a 15% grade - even then, its hard to get a pop.

I think you just had a faulty tyre or a foreign object.

I haven't had a puncture in the last 9,000 kms of road cycling.

Since you're getting a new tyre, try kevlar reinforced tyre


or buy the kevlar strips you can put between yhe tube and tyre.
