Anyone going (or been) to the Omega European Masters in Crans Montana?

I received some tickets to go to the Omega European Masters in a few weeks and looking forward to attend. However, since I've never been to a live golf tournament, nor to Crans-Montana, any tips/advice would be helpful on:

- how does one actually "participate" at a live golf tournament
- travel to/from Crans-Montana
- hotel suggestions in the area that provide easy access to the tournament

Thanks very much!

I went 3 or 4 years when PwC used to sponsor it, played in the pro-am. Do you have just tickets or hospitality too.

Either way, you basically watch live golf by going on the course and following a group or watching groups at a given hole. Some holes will have grandstands for the latter purpose, but you normally need an extra ticket to access those at least on the weekend. You can also watch player on the practise range. And of course mix it all up.

If you dont really know much about golf, following a group can be a bit difficult since you dont know the flow of the game, the course or the holes. So would go for the fixed approach; at Crans between the 7th and 8th holes is good; super spectacular view, a fun driveable par 4, followed by a tricky par 3, and a bit of a stadium configuration. Many other holes are tree lined.

Hotels will be eyewateringly expensive and pretty booked up in Crans. You can get there by public transport; sbb.ch is your friend for that.

...don't move a muscle, click a camera, sneeze, cough or make comments when a player is either teeing off or preparing to putt. And if someone shouts 'fore' and folk around you duck, turn away and/or cover their heads, do the same.

Good advice, especially since the spectators at Crans arent exactly the most knowledgable golf crowd, you wouldnt want to follow some of the examples they set. You really do overhear some classic conversation there.

Oh yes, and dont feel the need to wear golf shoes and clothing... its about as cool as going to watch a swim meet in your trunks... LOL.

I forgot - don't follow the example of German commentators who, in days of yore, when they saw a ball 2 metres from the hole on a downhill lie with a gale-force wind blowing from behind, were likely to say 'ah, that's a nice easy short putt.'

I received the tickets today. They are general access. From what I understand it starts at 7:30 am (!) Also checked hotels so think I will skip the insane prices and make it a day trip, so definitely won't be there at that time. Either car or SBB...is it crazy to think about driving a car there?? Thanks!

No, we always drove, I you like driving you can go over the Furka pass from Zurich, about 4 hours. You could have an early start, enjoy the golf, start the drive home and stop over somewhere nice on the way back, breakfast, little hike maybe...

Dont worry about the 0730 start... players go out in reverse order. The top of the leaderboard will only tee off at about 12:00, and finish at about 16:00. Of course after 12 there are less and less flights out on the course, and the popular groups will have largish followings.
