I suppose there's some use for them if you're old and infirm with a tendency to sit down all day but if he thing says you only took 5000 'steps' that day and your 'target' is 6000, what real benefit is there in walking around 800m or so up the road and back?

A bit of fresh air maybe, but negligible calories burnt and no fitness gained.

I'm not trying to spoil Richdog's thread but I just wonder about the point of all these things.
It's fine Tom you're not spoiling the thread, so feel free to wonder away! Personally, I'm not interested in attempting to convince other people to use them or justifying myself, I'm just interested in discussing with other people that do use them as I know my motivations and that's all I need. You are free to debate with whomever you like though.

I'm a fan of Fitbit, I started with the FORCE back in 2013 then they recalled this model because of skin iritation. I replaced it with FLEX in mid-2014 and it is still working fine until now. I had 3 bracelet replacement though.

I am diabetic so my target is always 20K steps or roughly 13 km.
When I started with mine I had some irritation, but now after a few washes the rubber is smoother and less grippy, so my arm hair isn't as under attack as it was when I first took it on and off... *winces*

Re: Anyone use a Fitbit or similar modern activity tracker?

I play football quite a lot...its invaluable for tracking how my stamina/performance has improved over time.

Its good in the gym too, because you can see better how you burn less calories when you do the same workout several times. Its far more accurate than the machines. You'd be surprised, the same workout can burn hundreds less calories after you've done a workout too many times and your body is used to it.

I can compare a game I played last week to a game I played three months ago, and see how I've improved (eg, run further, heart rate higher for longer, more calories burned etc)

It also helps to maintain a healthy calorie in/out level....if I know I've burned well over average calories on a day I feel less guilty about eating a pizza that night, or if I haven't burnt enough, I can see that and opt for the salad...it helps to equalise in and out. For what its worth, this is a really valuable feature for me.

Its fairly accurate too (since calories are linked to heart rate), and you'd be surprised what difference it makes to walk those extra 800 steps or so - you can really see the difference in calories from a day where I walked 10,000 steps or a day when I didn't. the difference can be quite high, depending on things like inclines, speed etc. Several hundred calories.

i had a fitbit device. i used it until the battery ran out and couldn't be bothered to ......
.....walk to the shop to buy a new one as I didn't have to satisfy the fitbit.

I ran 9k at lunch - well 7.5k + 200m of vertical climb - and I'm a fat git, so I burned around 23,000 calories doing so.

I'm going to have a slice of cake now

DK, not to dampen your mood... a 10k run for me is 650-700 cal according to my garmin watch. 23,000 cal is off the chart unless you weigh 2 tons!!!

As far as I recall, the fitbit only registers sustained physical activity if it lasts a minimum of 5 minutes with no interruptions.

I'm not sure masturbating furiously would trigger it. Definitely shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Its a bit like hard drugs - you build up a tolerance after a while. It can take Phil as long as 40mins to finish now - and that is using the best adult entertainment material a high speed internet connection can provide.

Based on the time it takes and the frequency you could argue that on any given day he is a complete w%^£*$

It would take less than 5 mins, if you used and fantasised over the Swiss version of the app. ........ fit.bitch

Re: Anyone use a Fitbit or similar modern activity tracker?

I have a Garmin Fenix 3 that I bought on primal.ch for a very competitive price and next day delivery. Superb service.

The watch itself came bundled with the heart rate monitor / strap and charger.

I use the watch mainly for running and cycling and I have to say, it is a superb addition to these activities. This is especially true for running and reading up on all of the metrics it tracks and then viewing your actual performance against these metrics really makes you think about the way you run.

I have improved my running performance dramatically, lost weight and am now thinking about running a marathon as a realistic prospect in the next 12 months - something that would have been unthinkable to me before.

It syncs very well with my android phone and after I come home from a run, it uploads my run automatically via the wi-fi. I can then log on to strava or the garmin connect site and view the stats instantly.

The watch itself is very intuitive to use and I got used to it very quickly. It also can connect with your phone via Bluetooth and flash up notifications including incoming calls. I don't use this all the time, but I do turn it on occasionally when I know my wife might be trying to call and I won't hear my phone in my pocket.

All in all, if you are thinking of trying to get in shape, I find this watch a great motivating companion.

I am already fit a bit. I don't wanna lose this bit of being fit, because it fits me a bit. It's a bitch (this fit). And I can bet a bit that this bit doesn't always fit.

Re: Anyone use a Fitbit or similar modern activity tracker?

And to complete my technology-based health-awareness trip I have just ordered a Withings wireless blood pressure monitor http://www.withings.com/uk/en/produc...essure-monitor from Amazon.de for considerably cheaper than it's available in CH http://www.amazon.de/Withings-WPM02_...blood+pressure

Shame Fitbit doesn't do one, but no biggie.

Re: Anyone use a Fitbit or similar modern activity tracker?

Fitbit came as a pre-installed app when I changed my phone, back in July - probably not as functional as a full-blown dedicated piece of kit (which they're always try to flog via email), but I use it to track my dog walking - distance and pace.

Last week I was 'awarded' my Italy badge - doggy and I have walked the equivalent of the length of Italy in the the last 4+ months ....... apparently.

Trying (but struggling) to break the 9 minute kilometre (walking) - but now it's dark in the woods, and wet leaves are hiding roots and rocks ...... wellies don't help, either.

V.happy with my fitbit flex. Bought on Galaxus.CH
I take all the measurements with a pinch of salt, it still acts as a nice guide on my weight loss journey.

The Fitbit Surge has a GPS chip so it will map your run (inc all stats), overlay that on a map and of course show you your HR.
