SAC - Swiss Alpine Club Zurich

Hey Every One!

I am thinking of joining the SAC in Zurich (either Horgan or UTO section). I am pretty excited about the whole prospect of meeting new people (especially the allusive Swissies!!!). My german is about B1 level, so I might struggle a bit, but I figure being immersed in it is better than not.

My question is, are any of you fantastic EFers a member in either of those sections? I was trying to figure out if either of them have regular meetings, but it is not so clear from their websites. Further, it is not clear if the tours they plan cost additional money (aside from your annual membership). As this is Switzerland, I am sure they do, but I couldn’t tell by just looking at the tour plan. Do any of you know?

Re: SAC - Swiss Alpine Club Zurich

I'm a member of the Uto section which is the bigger section, has a few thousands members. Lots of activities, but the number of participants is limited per activity, so there's some competition about getting a place on a tour.

Most members are Swiss and German, a few internationals here and there. You will def. meet them, and will be awed by the Swiss Alpine training and fitness.

For me understanding the Swiss German is not easy, and most tour leaders try to speak Hochdeutsch, but social chatter is going to be in Swiss German.

Most tour are free, and the leader gets 5CHF / participant. You nee to pay for your own transport. Extra costs are specified in the tour description. This is Uto specific, other Sections have other structure.

Hi!

I applied for membership with the Uto section about two months ago....and have heard nothing. Perhaps news of my atrocious fitness levels had reached them already
If you have any luck joining let me know, I will try again!

This is my second year as a member now. They just sent out the renewal forms on Tuesday, I think.

Maybe send them an email.

Hi Brewer,

Now since you've propably been a member of 5 years, did you enjoy your time with the club?
I have a good fitness level and some experience before this but i only speak english. Would you say it is wasted time for me then, since i don't speak swiss german?
