Ideas for skiing later this week

Hi Guys

Got a new set of gear over Christmas and very keen to get my first season off to a start. With the snow fall looking promising over the next 48 hours, what are your thoughts on where to start. Flumserberg maybe? I am an intermediate skier and live in Zurich.

Cheers,
John

Flumserberg is a good choice. I'd go by train or car to Unterterzen and cabin up from there. This saves a further 20 minute drive up on what could be fresh snow. Later in the season you can ski down to Oberterzen.

If the weather is good half of Zurich will be there, so you'll need to be there by 8.30 latest on Saturday and Sunday...

The French speaking part, or Romandie- is rather vague. Where will you be starting from? and what level are you looking at- some resorts are great for some, not so good for others. There has been a foot of snow overnight on very frozen ground- so will look at the resorts around here and see what's what.

Later edit - despite the foot of snow overnight- VD and NE and French Jura resorts are still closed- so you will have to aim higher.

http://www.stations-de-ski.ch/

Métabief/Mt d'Or on French side above Vallorbe are hoping for a bit more snow so they can open this week-end- helped by their recently installed snow-machines. Great for families.

www.station-metabief.com/

Les Rousses will also partially open this week-end - perhaps fully if it continues snowing like crazy as is now.

Snowing like crazy up on the NE/VD Jura now- so it may well open this week-end. They are ratracking/bashing like crazy to make it happen. As the base is frozen solid, they may well pull it off.

We're between Lausanne and Geneva, motorised... If that helps Odile. It's for tomorrow Friday, so openings this weekend won't (yet) be of interest to us.

I'd probably had over to France if I were there and check out conditions in the PdS. Or access it from the Swiss side at Morgins if that's closer to drive to than Morzine.

Re: Ideas for skiing later this week

The quickest access to Portes du Soleil from Lausanne is via Plan de Croix, just before Torgon above Vionnaz. But conditions are not good at the mo.

Leysins or Villars would be your nearest and both partially opened. But I'd head to Sion and up to Nendaz and continue up by car to Siviez/Super Nendaz, if it was me. Or to Veysonnaz and take the bubble up to the top of Piste de l'Ours and ski up there. Or to Champéry and up with the cable to Les Crozets.

Took your advice and went to Champery and Les Crosets. Fab. Thanks a million!

Excellent- was hoping you would come back and say where you went. It great up there and the view of my favourite mountains on your photo, Les Dents du Midi. Did you get a chance to go right up and down to Avoriaz- and back on the impressive Pas de Chavanette run?

No we only took a swiss pass, not including France because we do short days because we drop the kids in creche and have to be in time for pick up... Plus the first day is meant to be an easy "get familair with skiiing once more" day. Is that run the famous swiss wall? We'll go again this Friday coz I forgot my thermos in one of the restaurants on the piste!

Re: Ideas for skiing later this week

Yes, one of the Swiss walls. There is another between Verbier and Siviez/Super-Nendaz- shorter but perhaps a bit steeper. Used to love Tortin when my knees were up to it... but since it is shared with snow-boarders- the 'rythm ' of the moguls just doesn't work.

Nothing against snowboarders btw- used to be one too- but they do work differently- and steep mogul blacks should have 'segregated' parts for that reason.

Honestly: It's a pretty terrible idea - all of Zurich, especially the people who don't own a car and need easy train access go to Flumserberg. In my experience is it especially this time of the season the most busy place around.

If you have the option, skip it and drive on... I was in Davos this weekend and the slopes were half empty. Saturday was great, Sunday pretty cloudy, but fresh powder... today is probably a killer day, but well, it's Monday...

Re: Ideas for skiing later this week

I am very surprised about the low amount of pistes open by this time of the season, considering how much snow we got in the last two weeks. The valleys are already white with at least 30cm of snow (and around 1 meter on the top) but then, according to iSKI:

In Schwyz, St. Gallen, Glarus, Graubünden:
- Flumserberg: 28/65km open.
- Hoch-Ybrig: 14/66km open.
- Elm: 8/43km open.
- Laax: 59/224km open.
- Obersaxen: 26/126km open.
- Lenzerheide/Arosa: 114/229km open.
- Davos: 104/279km open (Madrisa is still closed).
- Corviglia: 111/184km open.
- Corvatsch: 64/144km open.

In Austria:
- Ischgl: 197/238km open.
- St. Anton: 209/305km open.

In other parts of CH:
- Grindelwald: 101/206km open.
- Zermatt: 111/360km open.

It is only my second season on the slopes, so I am probably missing something, but why are there so few runs open?

Re: Ideas for skiing later this week

I skied Flumserberg yesterday. Generally, piste conditions were good. Some nasty icy sections on steeper bits but also some nice powder on the edges! The visibility was bad though. Much more an issue than the snow conditions.

Re: Ideas for skiing later this week

Avalanche risk. You don't just need some snow, it need to come in the right layers to make sure you don't bury some tourists under an avalance on a slope.
