Hiking to Pilatus kulm?

Hello all,

Just wondered if anyone has ever hiked up to or down from Pilatus Kulm?

This weekend I was think of walking up from Alpnachstad (via Lütoldsmatt) and then back down (via Ämsigen).

I'd appreciate any tips about the terrain or conditions. Is it safe to do it on your own?

Thanks!

Re: Hiking to Pilatus kulm?

I have been up and down several times and it is certainly safe to do on your own as long as you have a good sense of direction and preferably have a map along to consult from time to time. The trails are way marked as all Swiss trails tend to be and it is all red/white (no Alpine routes). That being said, it is quite physically demanding and will be a long day of walking.

If you go up the other side from Kriens you have a couple of places you can bail out and catch a cable-car if need be.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip!

Is there a marked trail from Kriens to Pilatus Kulm as I couldn't spot it on the map?

How long did that one take you?

Re: Hiking to Pilatus kulm?

Yes, there are any number of ways to go up from Kriens to the Fräkmüntegg area (I actually took the trail numbered 14 on your map up from Hergiswil). From there you take number 9 and this comes around the back Chriesiloch (right at the top of your map). From there you actually walk through some tunnels with a few nice viewpoints to get around to the main hotel area - very cool path. Trail 9 is marked as difficult and it certainly is - quite steep at times. I really enjoyed it but it depends on your fitness and confidence. That route from Hergiswil took about 3 hours at a brisk pace. I'm not sure what the "official" time estimate is.
