Glad FMF showed some commone sense though!

Glad FMF showed some commone sense though! | | | | | I would rather be dead, than paralysed, I live for sport & skiing, my wife knew I would not want to survive if I was going to be disabled.

You put unconscious people in the recovery position where yes, it's better paralysed than dead but not conscious, breathing and talking people! You leave them in the position they are lying in and let the professionals move them.

Good lord, just seen this FMF. Seems you were very lucky to have such good doctors looking after you. Best wishes for a complete recovery and that you're on the slopes again next winter. You put unconscious people in the recovery position where yes, it's better paralysed than dead but not conscious, breathing and talking people! | | | | | Quite so, although there are levels of 'conscious' such that even someone talking may need to be regarded as unconscious and put into the recovery position if you're not able to monitor their breathing (if you need to attend to someone else or go for help, for example). | Quote: | | | | | You leave them in the position they are lying in and let the professionals move them. | | | | | But don't automatically trust the 'professionals' either. When I was lying on the road following a spine-first impact into the crash barrier the French ambulance crew actually helped me remove my leather jacket, whose spine protector had probably saved my life, but was uncomfortable to lie on. Yes, they helped me twist my body found to raise one arm then the other. At that time I wasn't thinking straight, and had been walking around, but their actions (or assistance) could have led to severe consequences, given the nine crushed and splintered vertebrae...
Thankfully a doctor and then the REGA copper arrived soon after, limiting any further possibility of them helping me towards paralysis.

The hospital would not let me go home in the car my wife had rented so insisted on an Ambulance. I was immediately taken to the cash machine & they have failed to five me a proper receipt. I suppose for 2 hours & 45 minutes for 404 euros, is actually cheaper than a taxi.

There are other times you may need to move a casualty when you really shouldn't too such as too shelter if you are going to be benighted. | Quote: | | | |
But don't automatically trust the 'professionals' .
| | | | | True too.
Once when climbing in the Pyrennes, a helicopter arrived to take a friend to hospital who had fallen a few hundred metres and they set up a belay to lower the casualty (now in a stretcher) 50m or so down to the helicopter.
But when one of them got round to actually lowering the casualty, he ignored the belay his colleague had set up and used mine as he thought it was the better of the two. They took my rope with them too!
