Golf Basel and Platzreife

Hi Everyone,

I want to start playing golf more regularly (other than annual trips to South Africa), but have learned that in typical Swiss fashion I need a golfing license for this, called a platzreife. I could more or less find all the information needed about this, but I donít know whether the theory test can be done in English? Anybody know?

Also, can anyone suggest good places to play other than the little course in Rheinfelden?

Let me know if you are looking for a playing partner!

Cheers

Re: Golf Basel and Platzreife

Check out if there is a Migros Golf club nearby, they offer that.

Alternatively, if you are a member of a club elsewhere, your handicap certificate allows you to play here

Re: Golf Basel and Platzreife

There is an expat Golf society - Golf4Fun they have strong links with Golf Point Urdorf, the website used to be in English but they are currently re-vamping so only in german at the moment, all the staff their speak English and they do platzreife courses in English.

If you check course websites near you, you'll probably find that they have English speaking Pro's (usually hailing from Native English speaking countries).

I can personally highly recommend Andrew Gossage contactable through Swiss short game

just remembered you might also want to investigate Basel Baggers

Contact the Club for more info. They have an official Referee, speaks fluent English and very helpful. A new man at the reception was a former Playing Pro, speaks fluent English and could not do more to help.
They also have a Temporary Membership for 3 years. Course is not big or probably not very challenging for good players. Members are super friendly and easy going. Whether you speak German, Swiss German or neither. No tee Time. Open almost the entire year. 40 mins from Basel.
However, France and Germany is much cheaper in terms of Greenfee. Several very good ones, just across the border.
Happy Golfing.

Re: Golf Basel and Platzreife

Thanks for the tips.

I ended up doing the Platzreife through Birs Golf in Laufental.

Next thing is whether to join a club or do the ASGI thing...I'm struggling with why I would pay the steep fees for membership and 'spielrecht' at one club... when I could be an individual member for much cheaper and play a variety of courses...

Wish they would make the memberships a bit cheaper...or at least allow intermediate type deals...

Cheers
