Idea for an ultra run... Zurichsee Lauf!

Hi,

I was thinking about initiating an annual run around the lake of Zurich, from Zurich city, to Rapperswil, and back along the other side. All told, it's about 65km.

I've done quite a bit of running this summer so I "think" I'm probably able to do it. I'm no elite, and expect to run at a very leisurely pace. I have participated in a couple of ultramarathons in the past.

So, if I loosely organise it, would anyone else on this forum be interested. I'm thinking soon ... Saturday 6th October.

By loosely organise, I mean, set the start and end point, provide some guidance, and buy a drink at the end for anyone who completes the very first "Zurichsee Lauf"

There would be no real aid stations, no baggage collection, your health and wellbeing are your responsibility, but hey... it's something new!

I'd only stipulate that you should have enough current running training to be confident of making it around in one piece.... I suppose that means having completed several marathons this year, an ultra, or maybe an ironman. The spirit of the race however, will be more fun than professional.

So, if there is any interest either let me know here or PM me.

I know a guy who would be interested, as far as I know he's been training for a double marathon most of the summer. I'll get on to him and see what he thinks.
No aid stations for that distance could be a killer. If you need support for the day let me know and I could shoot ahead of you with water/gels and other bits then move on again. I'll bring a book for the wait.

Re: Idea for an ultra run... Zurichsee Lauf!

Thanks Ato, very cool.

Yeah, I'm currently figuring on carrying a rucksack with some water and food, combined with fountains along the way, and the garages / kiosks I can find!

In terms of fountains and potential aid ... having ridden it on a bike enough times, my memory is telling me that between Zurich and Meilen is no problem, Meilen to Rapperswil is more patchy, Rapperswil obviously is ok, beyond it is patchy but a few garages here and there. Of course, without proper support its more of a fun run than a proper race, but I think that's ok for now. I'll ride it once next week to make a note of whats what. Then I could produce a crib sheet of sorts.

Lets see if I get any interest before coming back to your super kind offer of assistance!

No worries, I'm in no condition to run anything due to my own lazyness. However I fully support people doing silly things and can often be found shouting a mixture of abuse and encouragement at ironman events. I'll be by motorbike so can easily tie 2 big rucksacks on and not have to worry about finding proper parking spots.

Great idea! My husband is an ultra runner and would definitely be interested in such an annual event.
It will not be possible for him to participate already at the beginning of October though. (He is doing a 246k race in end September, so he should be in recovery mode most of October).

Happy running!

See, so my little run is more of a mere jog

As an update, Ato's mate seems to be in for the run... so now we are two!

I'll update as and when I have more info.

Re: Idea for an ultra run... Zurichsee Lauf!

Together with Ato's friend Ander, we completed this run on Saturday.

Weather was super... almost too hot at over 20 degrees in the afternoon. Neither of us were in perfect condition, especially with quite stiff legs from all the asphalt, so we took it pretty steady.

Facilities / garages were plentiful enough that we didn't struggle for nutrition.

We ran clockwise around the lake, having a mid way break in Rapperswil. It took us eight hours and the total distance was 66.6km, mostly sticking the the main street route.

It was a fun and exhausting thing to do, but definitely one to add to my list
