Outdoor activities - camping and mountains

Hey all!

I moved to Zurich in September and trying to find any clue about joining outdoor activities.

I like to hike mountains and camping. I am also a newbie climber and interested in mountaineering. I really don't want to stay around city/home during weekends, so I am trying to figure out any outdoor activities from mountaineering to just-for-fun camping.

I also checked Swiss Alpine Club, I am thinking to join one chapter, but still I want myself to be able to organize trips, camps on my own during weekends.

Any ideas/experiences about these?

I am also interested in a climbing partner if anyone is looking for one!

Thanks

Joining the Club could lead to meeting a buddy or group to climb with in the Alps, they organize trips every few weeks especially if you're considering mountaineering in the high altitude regions. Crossing glaciers and icy ridges without a roped party is never a good idea. Camping alone is fine I guess.

It's a shame you're in Zurich, I mostly climb in the Trient region in Valais and can't always find someone willing to climb with me, apparently risking your life on crevassed glaciers and 4000ers isn't my friends' idea of "fun".

The mountaineering seasons over now but if you're desperate for some high altitude mountain/glacier fun in the Trient region, hit me up in the summer.

I know it's not outdoors, but have you checked out either of the Kletterzentrum indoor climbing gyms?

http://www.kletterzentrum.com

The outdoor options are almost endless, even close to Zürich. You can look over the network of yellow hiking trail maps, pick a place that looks interesting, take train or car to get there, and make it a day. Sometimes even just riding a gondola up a mountain, having a coffee or two at the top, and then heading home can be satisfying.

I'd say it really depends on what you want to do and the weather conditions. There is also a lot of topo and outdoor map information out there for Switzerland. That might also be helpful.

There are at least 2 outdoor groups from Zurich operating via the Meetup app..seems like a lively international community.

Good luck and be safe.

If you're serious about climbing and mountaineering, CAS is largely what will be the best option. Not only very organized, as you'd expect, but many professional guides and courses to develop your abilities + it is effectively year round and you will meet many like minded outdoor enthusiasts
