Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Zurich

Looking to start a new activity and came across brazilian jiu jitsu. Whilst the body contact aspect looks a little daunting, it looks like a lot of fun and I prefer martial arts where i am not hitting of being hit.

Anyone have any recommendations of where to try it? I am English speaking with limited German, which probably makes a big difference for instruction. A work colleague (female) may also try it so are the gyms mixed? Also if anyone fancies it, shout up.

The only gym I went to before damaging myself was Carlson Gracie gym in Wallisellen (very near the train station), very friendly crowd there. The gym is run by a brazillian with a decent grasp of german and very little english, but the clarity of physical instruction means that language is not an issue. Most of the blues and purples have english and the instructor often lapses into portugese. The gym is focused on competing with a lot of free rolling where the more advanced people will give pointers.
The gym is mixed, but it's about 90% male. There are some advanced belted women there and women are normally matched up for rolling with people who won't brute force them until they have learnt a bit.

just to try and see tbh. All options sound good and the english may not matter given its a physical activity

Re: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Zurich

My husband is training at BJJ Lab in Oerlikon. He said one could try it for 1 week for free, all classes are taught in English. There are both men, women and kids. And it's only BJJ, not MMA.

They're both mentally challenging, and I will say I came away with a lot more bruises grappling than boxing. You will find that when people are grabbing holds they'll often pinch or poke by accident. So your bicep and collar area will become camo coloured. Not to worry, nobody will see them unless you are shirtless.
