Tennis history

Is anyone able to provide me with information about the history of tennis in Switzerland? My father played in a 'Swiss National Tournament' played at Montreux and won the competition in 1929.

Re: Tennis history

Swisstennis.ch has historic records of Davis Cup and some other tournaments.

Looking back, in 1927 there was a Davis Cup match in Montreux against Rep. of South Africa. It gives these stats:

Davis Cup (Z-2R) RSA d. SUI 5-0 in SUI
Europe 16 Montreux, Switzerland
20 May 1927 - 22 May 1927
R1 Jean WUARIN (SUI) L Jack CONDON (RSA) 0-6 2-6 6-2 5-7
R2 Charles AESCHLIMAN (SUI) L Patrick SPENCE (RSA) 4-6 4-6 7-9
R3 Charles AESCHLIMAN / Maurice FERRIER (SUI) L Louis RAYMOND / Patrick SPENCE (RSA) 2-6 7-9 4-6
R4 Charles AESCHLIMAN (SUI) L Jack CONDON (RSA) 4-6 4-6 2-6
R5 Jean WUARIN (SUI) L Patrick SPENCE (RSA) 1-6 6-8 2-6
Period W/L: 21 - 24

See page here: https://www.swisstennis.ch/sites/def...tivity_sui.pdf

Edited to add:
The Montreux Museum did a expo on history of sports in the area, and this document, tri-lingual, gives info on tennis and other sports. It seems your father would have played at the Montreux Lawn Tennis Club, which held the Davis Cup from 1923 to 1955 plus other tournaments. Read more here: http://www.museemontreux.ch/wa_files...202017_FDE.pdf Might be worth contacting the museum or the club to get more info if they have it.

Re: Tennis history

There's a South African (Petchell) listed as winning in Montreux in 1929 on this page

And a press report in this archive here

You can also try contacting the club to see if they have more info.
