Funny how we all loved 'em back in the day.

I don't know that second one, though. Is it a dangerous dog breed?

No, it's one of the better known anime movies about cyberpunk bikers.

Re: wing chun

Just out of curiousity Ouchboy what triggered this thread? Bad experiences in your own classes? Genuie questions as I am curious.

I think Wing Chun is only as good as the teacher and the practitioner. If it was crap/ineffective my cousins husband (who has lived a very colourful life, is a hard-as-nails a scary guy and obsessed with self-defence) wouldn't be doing it as intensively as he does. He said he got very lucky with the teacher and the style he trains is extremely practical and contact sparring focused.

I did it for a total of a few years and had one great teacher who taught it in a hard and practical way, and one terrible teacher who taught it in the BS super soft showy way. In the end it is still better than learning nothing and has some useful techniques. Plus, it allows practitioners to do it well into old age which is always good.

that bullying thread 2 weeks ago, A binge of master wong videos and a jre guest talking about aikido. for some reason this has been in my orbit.

People latch onto aikido and WC particularly for weird things. when they are basically the homeopathy of martial arts.

That simply isn't true. I'll be the first to say that Wing Chun is hardly the most effective and complete fighting system out there, nor is it going to be winning any competitive MA competitions, but to say it is completely ineffective is just plain wrong.

Aikido I have no clue about, other than Steven Seagull made it very famous in the 80's and 90's. I don't really have much interest in Japanese MA in general though.

Re: wing chun

I can't speak for others and Chuff probably has the right of it in that more is dependant on the teacher than the system.

In my experience with a background of boxing and then some mma/bjj, I've been to 2 aikido schools where they were abysmal. One of them was training beside our boxing class in uni. If you had gentle open training they just kept getting tagged in the face, gut and fingers. How do you tag a person in their fingers? Easy when they keep reaching for your hands like a slow gollum. Then if they ever do catch your hand they proceed to drop any semblance of defence elsewhere and go at it like a child trying to prove he can open a stiff jar lid.
This might have been the teacher, as he was as bad an offender as the rest.
If you removed striking from the equation it was nearly worse as they keep trying to dive for finger and wrist locks with little regard for body position, meaning they often ended up dumped, mounted and choked/armbarred. Their focus on the small joints to the exclusion of proper elbow, shoulder and naked chokes gives them a very small playbook.
Now I will say one thing which is the big disclaimer, they know a lot more than a person with nothing, against an idiot in the street they "might" have an advantage.

From WC I've only met the guys who came to grappling classes to cover the gaps in their knowledge. We sometimes messed about with striking, the largest problem was that the WC guys move very unpredictably compared to boxing/MT, they could get a few tags in whilst you were measuring up. Once you have them figured it's all fair game. Due to their over commitment on some strikes (I don't know which style they were using so ?) they soon learned grappling punishes commitment worse than your first love. So I reckon it might be more useful in a "self defence" situation against people who've been boxing as they just feel weird at first.
