Far too many instructors have no real knowledge of the mountain- fabulous technique and skills - but they do not feel or understand the mountain.
A very senior instructor told me many years ago- if you need a guide to go off-piste, don't choose the doctor's son from Geneva or London- but the old guy who was born and bred on that mountain, even if his competitive skills are not so impressive.

Since it takes at least 7 years to qualify as a guide, I take that with a pinch of salt, in any case Skiing is only be 'B' part of being a guide, climbing is the real challenge. If he was born in the mountains, I would have expected him to have been a racer in his youth, strange that his competitive skills were lacking. The tale does not add up |

The mountains, like the sea- are best understood by those who have grown up reading, watching, listening for- the signs. Instinct - probably cannot be learnt- or would take a VERY long time.
