Garmin Fenix and detailed EU/Swiss maps for hiking etc?

Hi guys. I have a Garmin Fenix 6S Pro and find the default maps that come with the device pretty minimalist and functional at best. I need some good detailed maps for navigating when hiking and snowshoeing and do not want to pay hundreds for the 'extra-detailed' Garmin maps they sell which are also lacking in some areas.

------------------

UPDATE 22.01.2019:

Well guys in the end I went for the Talkytoaster "Alps" series of maps which includes CH and the surrounding areas. https://shop.talkytoaster.me.uk/prod...alps-only-dem/

Loaded it on my phone, set it to high detail and it seems pretty damn good so I am looking forward to trying it out in the mountains soon. It cost around 18chf in total... vs the 300chf that Garmin are trying to charge for the Swiss Mobility Topo maps.

------------------

I have been doing a lot of research on 3rd party maps and there are tons of options out there, but the problem is that not all of them have what I need. Which is ideally:
  1. Full Europe map (but I can do CH only if needed)
  2. Detailed topography including contours and elevation
  3. Hiking/biking trails (as much as feasible)
    Routable

Options I have found so far are:

-----------------------

Opentopomap: http://garmin.opentopomap.org/

Seems to have a good level of detail and is routable, with optional contour layers, but only seems downloadable in smaller portions as separate maps, not as one larger Europe map. However, the "Alps" map may suffice for my purposes. I will try it tonight and see if I can give some feedback.

-----------------------

Openstreetmap: https://www.openstreetmap.org/export...47.3473/8.5077

Pleasing and easy to read format with a decent level of detail but no contours or detailed topography information.

-----------------------

Wanderreitkarte: https://wanderreitkarte.de/garmin_de.php

Decent level of detail (though lacking DSM shading) and easy to read, has hiking routes, but is not routable.

-----------------------

Talkytoaster: https://talkytoaster.me.uk/

These maps are known for being very good and are pretty cheap, but all have to be purchased separately as countries which is not so ideal.

-----------------------

So, any input from Garmin Fenix owners who use their watches for similar things and have some knowledge about and/or experience with this topic would be much apppreciated. Cheers.

Garmin Topo Schweiz Pro: https://buy.garmin.com/de-CH/CH/p/573310

Con: Costly CHF 400 at Gamrin, ~CHF 300 from 3rd party dealers (see toppreise.ch )
Pro: Comes with the official 1:25'000 topographic map from swisstopo, hence the price (This one here: https://map.geo.admin.ch/?lang=en&to...e-pk25.noscale )

Note: Not to be confused with the older Garmin Swiss TOPO Schweiz V4 Pro

Thanks but as I said in the first post I am not considering the vastly overpriced Garmin maps which are not even as good as some of the free ones.

Added a detail, that the price is due to the included swisstopo map. Any product which has the official swisstopo map in this resolution will cost a lot.

It is outrageously overpriced and many of the free alternatives have more detail and are more regularly updated. In my view (and judging from the poor reviews and user feedback online) it shouldn't even be seriously considered.

Depends on what you want. The updates of the swisstopo 1:25000 maps can be found here https://www.swisstopo.admin.ch/conte...rungsstand.pdf

The geology and the hiking tracks do not change from day to day. The elevation curve and representation of the landscape is the best you can get (save an orienteering map). You might want to check the quality of the Open Source elevation data around Gondo VS.

Speaking of Gondo: This https://map.geo.admin.ch/?selectedNo...e-pk25.noscale vs https://opentopomap.org/#map=15/46.21481/8.11293

OSM and Opentopo, as good as it is, can be seriously dangerous in the mountains if there is low visibility due to fog. An uncharted cliff or ravine is the last you like to encounter.
