Id advise a large flat place, like a parking lot.
I taught my boys on the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week.

OP - never too late to learn. CH is a great place to ride.

Re: Almost 30 and never biked before

I am planning to start cycling after a long long time ( 20+ years ). Was very good in college but now am not feeling confident enough to start cycling on busy / curvy roads right away. Can anyone suggest some places around Lausanne where a lapsed cyclist can practice in relative peace and regain his touch?

You can try Avenue Pierre de Coubertin / Parc de Vidy / Theatre de Vidy area, it's flat, it's got little/slow traffic and a few car parks to try things out.
