I don't think cross country skiing will be affected though.....oder?
I mean, that would be absurd.

depends what you mean by x country skiing. No-one could stop me getting on my XC skis and go forth from the field at the back of me. But where it is official, with passes and well prepared pistes, you just don't know.

However, will have to be careful not to cross into France- which around here is quite difficult

France had a 1km or 100m v limit from home last time, so somewhat limited to many.

Yes, 1km for exercise. Of course, if you had a shopping bag with you and could reasonably claim you're going to a shop, i.e. there is one in the direction and within reasonable distance, you could always use that as your reason instead.

However the mountains were closed in March & April, you could not go shopping on skis.

sorry Merrylegs- but some of us just love snow- not British snow, 'the wrong kind of snow as British Rail called it' - but crisp, fluffy, sparkly snow. And when it squeaks under your boots, you know you are going to have a great day on the slopes, or out of them <3

I mean, you have just chosen the wrong country

Re: Ski Season 2020/2021 - predictions

Bergfex currently forecasting some 50cm in the mountains my way by next weekend. Maybe 10 or 15cm down here as well although looking at the temperatures that will likely be short-lived wet stuff.

Possible short föhn on Friday between the 1st and 2nd batches might melt a bit though.

Edit....just 12 hours later the second batch is canceled. Now just 20cm followed by föhn.

I agree, the snow along La Côte is often heavy wet stuff.

They can't. It will be wear a mask, and good luck.
Everyone knows what to expect, so just don't go if you're concerned about catching the virus.

Re: Ski Season 2020/2021 - predictions

I can't swim, and I am afraid of water! I'll just have to dream of Summer, laying on a beach with a glass or two of white wine at my side, basking in the sunshine, and not a snow-flake or mountain in sight. That's my idea of pleasure!!!

While I am a fish and water sports fan I can totally see the appeal of a hot beach and dry white!!!!

But winter is magic here, really..

As of yesterday, it's within 20km of home and up to 3h. Yoopee, so basically you can do what you want. No more gendarmes hiding in the mountains to trap unwary hikers or swooping down in helicopters to catch trail runners.

If you mean from a ski point of view, rather than Covid, then skiers doing ski de randonnée are responsible for themselves, like mountaineering. You need to be able to recognize an avalanche slope and avoid it. Also carry a radio beacon so that rescuers can find you when you are buried in the snow.

Re: Ski Season 2020/2021 - predictions

Seems there's a fight coming on skiing. Talk of limiting them to 2/3 of their average christmas numbers over the last 5 years (bear in mind that includes two years without snow so something less than half normal capacity).

You will likely be dead by the time the rescuers arrive, you need to be saved by someone in your group. Once you have been buried for 15 minutes the chance of being alive drops very rapidly.

And the kit to call for help and to find and dig out your ex-friends.
