Skitouring & Splitboarding - not lookin' good for 20/21 season

Fellow snow-lovers,

I went yesterday to the local doodah to get my new pair of skins. The guy told me something that left me frozen: Translated to English:

"you are lucky to get the skins! We are sold out in spliboards & skins, the guys in front (Berg, another large ski shop) also have run out of touring skis. As people fear the ski lifts will be closed, they are turning to ski touring"

Do you know what it means? If every year there is in average 18 - 20 dead people (and 5 x times more trapped) in avalanches, this year the risk will be extreme, with all these people with NO experience going up the mountain. https://www.slf.ch/en/avalanches/des...tatistics.html

Your thoughts?

If you are starting skitouring or spliboarding this year, please make sure that you join one of the alpine clubs. For your own security, and everybody on the mountain (that you see, and that you don't see)

Thanks!

First snow weekend (12/12/2020).... and already 3 death people for avalanches in Switzerland: 2 x free riders + 1 x skitourer.

If you do not have experience, please stick to the slopes, or call the SAC to follow courses!

Keep safe - for you, and for everybody around you.
Thanks

Re: Skitouring & Splitboarding - not lookin' good for 20/21 season

Skiing areas are now having to deal with skitourers who go down the slopes at night. Because the snow cats are busy grooming after 5 and quite often use long cables to help them, staff are afraid there may be deadly accidents on the horizon. Melchsee Frutt is offering Wednesday evening skiing for skitourers to satisfy the demand.

Ski touring has become more popular through the years but this year it has taken a real jump. The OP's warning is spot on.

SLF winter summary, available in German and French. Overall higher number of avalanches and fatalities than average, but sounds like mostly due to unfavorable snow conditions rather than anything to do with Covid.
