Mountaineering / Alpine climbing

Hello Everyone,

I recently moved to Switzerland (from Sweden) and i am want to start getting into alpine climbing. since I have only been doing "extreme" hiking before, what would be the best way to start doing this?

is it to join a bouldering gym and start practicing there to get a hang of the ropes or is it best to practice outside with the proper rope technique and start going on easy mountaineering trails? for the time being, I do not plan on bouldering or rock climbing. I am more interested in mountaineering and if climbing is required, ice climbing.

of course, i am aware that there will be some climbing involved no matter where you are both on rock and snow/ice.

does anyone know if there is another forum or website where you can find partners / groups for this? i am living in Glarus which is south of Zurich.

Re: Mountaineering / Alpine climbing

Join your local SAC section and they will have a timetable of outings at all levels plus some which are aimed at training in new skills etc.

Re: Mountaineering / Alpine climbing

SAC Tödi is probably the one closest to you. The site's English version may have less content than its German version as the latter is the group's language.
If that's unsuitable search for "SAC xx" with xx being the area or community.

Your description sounds like you may be interested in what's called "Klettersteig" aka Via Ferrata. Remember to enquire about that.

There's also VKL:

http://www.vertical-glarnerland.ch

Covering the climbing and bouldering halls at lintharena, and a bunch of outdoor stuff. They do meets etc if you want proper climbing.

Re: Mountaineering / Alpine climbing

Its also an option just to hire a guide to do some 'harder' peaks. Just so you know how it feels.
