B&I Lions Tour

Hi all,

Thought I would get this started for a bit of banter and general chat.

B&I Lions tour finally kicks off this weekend properly. Lots of interesting goings on with regards to the tour.

Should be an interesting tour. Boks are unfortunately quite badly undercooked as they haven't played since the WC. First few games against our provincial teams should be a walk in the park for the lions, as our provincial teams are missing all their key players and they haven't played outside opposition for ages. Boks will hopefully be a different story, but will be tough. Hopefully Rassie and Nienaber have managed to get the guys ready. Our European based players should at least be in decent form, but will depend how everything gels. Covid also not helping, as Gauteng is the epicenter and 2 games are scheduled to be played there. Rumours of a venue bubble, with the games potentially being moved to CT, will help the lions as they are at sea level and the CT conditions are more European like in terms of weather.

Anyway, lets see, let the games begin!

Anybody going to watch it somewhere this weekend, there's a clash with some of the football but I'd hope Kennedys in Zurich might have it on.

I know for the main games, if you are outside of Zurich, the tennis club in Rüschlikon and the pitch and putt in affoltern am Albis will likely be showing them.

Re: B&I Lions Tour

So first game in 20 months for the Boks… yip and they were pretty rusty. First half definitely rusty, but got a bit better in the second. Some positives at least though.

On to today’s game. As I said previously, B&I Lions should easily handle our provincial teams and our local lions are no exception being one of the weaker teams. They should be targeting 50 points at least.

Doubt the provincial teams will be tenderising the tourists ahead of the main event this time around.

Re: B&I Lions Tour

So teams have now been set and tomorrow the real tour starts.

Springboks

South Africa: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Francois de Klerk, 8 Albertus Smith, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Siyamthanda Kolisi (captain), 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Trevor Nyakane, 2 Mbongeni Mbonambi, 1 Retshegofaditswe Nche.
Replacements: 16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Steven Kitshoff, 19 Frans Malherbe, 19 Lodewyk de Jager, 20 Rynhardt Elstadt, 21 Herschel Jantjies, 22 Elton Jantjies, 23 Damian Willemse.

Lions

British and Irish Lions: 15 Stuart Hogg, 14 Anthony Watson, 13 Elliot Daly, 12 Robbie Henshaw, 11 Duhan van der Merwe, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Ali Price, 8 Jack Conan, 7 Tom Curry, 6 Courtney Lawes, 5 Alun Wyn Jones (captain), 4 Maro Itoje, 3 Tadhg Furlong, 2 Luke Cowan-Dickie, 1 Wyn Jones.
Replacements: 16 Ken Owens, 17 Rory Sutherland, 18 Kyle Sinckler, 19 Tadhg Beirne, 20 Hamish Watson, 21 Conor Murray, 22 Owen Farrell, 23 Liam Williams.

Overall good selections with some very interesting matchups.

For me our minor question marks will be on our first string front row as they haven’t dominated the scrums as well as our RWC guys. Second string on the other hand will be very strong. Kwagga is a decent no8, but not in the league of Duane. Bench looks good, but Elton unfortunately is not on form at the moment, so hopefully pollard can last the full 80. Really interested to see how Kolbe and van der Merwe matchup.

Again, we are undercooked and quite a few players were in isolation due to covid, so that will only add to it. The venue favors the lions as the pitch in Cape Town is damp, soft and temperatures quite chilly. On top, game 2 and 3 will remain in Cape Town, so again will help the lions. Will be tough, but let’s see. Come on boks!

Re: B&I Lions Tour

Really looking forward to it now. Terrified of that SA bench, there appears to be no shortage of mutant men on that side of the world!

I think the Lions need to get ahead and hold out. Can't see them getting any change out of the SA defense if they go behind as Murray / Farrell are not the electrifying types to pull something out of the bag but they will be well suited towards steadying the ship and seeing the game out.

I have no idea how the series will go but it will be close, no whitewash. South African TMO will be interesting Good luck!!

Yip, bench looks very good, and I'm almost certain the front row will be swapped out at halftime. Would agree generally, but we may also fade (forwards excluded) due to lack of game time and guys coming back from isolation, so who knows.

Farrell (jokes aside on his tackle technique...) hasn't looked in great form and when he did play was kicking aimlessly. They need to sort out their kicking game, as Kolbe will be waiting for any errant balls. They will need to starve him of ball. Anyway lets see, our big issue will be if pollard doesn't fire or goes down, then we have a problem.

Re: B&I Lions Tour

For anyone interested, Premier Sports appears to have the rights to broadcast the games in Switzerland. Commentary available in English it seems.

The remaining games on the tour are available for $49. There also appears to be a wealth of content related to previous tours available, including the earlier games from this tour on demand.

Excellent game all round with both teams turning up. Courtney Lawes was the best player on the pitch by a country mile imho.. closely followed by Itoje.
Boks were outstanding in the first half but not sure it was a good idea to change the so-called 2nd string forwards for the second half, the SA bench unsurprisingly was not as good as the lions.
The boks looked like they ran out of puff towards the end but then again the lions are a scratch team playing away ..albeit with mostly wonderful players …so these things even out.
On another day the lions could also have lost (Allende’s ‘try’, Watsons tackle …really? ) and I can quite easily see SA winning the next 2 games..or not.
Roll on next Saturday.

Disagree completely - scrums weren't reffed at all but cameras showed ridiculous boring in on Furlong in particular which a better ref would have pinged SA off the park for. Daly at 13 didnt work out so would expect Henshaw to be pushed to 13 and Farrell or Aki to come in - what do you think?

Re: B&I Lions Tour

As a South African (and very passionate Bok supporter, I might add) I have been cringing reading the comments on various social media platforms blaming the ref for the loss. There were some questionable calls, but like most games I thought they went both ways and evened out in the end. In my mind, the best team won.

The trite fact is that this was a team that hadn’t played a decent game together in nearly two years, and it showed. I think the plan to avoid playing The Rugby Championship last year came back to bite Rassie here. These guys are not fully fit and there is no way we can contain a full strength team compromised of the best players from 4 premier rugby playing nations in this state.

Frankly, I am a little worried this may end up in a whitewash (although I’ll still be wearing the jersey and supporting like mad from the comfort of my living room)!

Re: B&I Lio

Interesting game, disappointing that we didn’t manage to win, but then as a previous poster mentioned, our guys really looked like they lacked proper battle hardened game time. First half was decent, but we really dropped it in the second. Regarding the referee and TMO, would agree, the general quality was bad, but it affected both teams, and yeah maybe one team benefited a little more, but that’s pretty normal and can easily reverse in the next game. Just the bounce of the ball really. Really a shame we aren’t playing in Joburg as that would open the game up nicely. Let’s see, I wouldn’t write the boys off yet, as they will improve.

For me, we sorely missed Duane vermeulen, as much as I like kwagga, he doesn’t have that Stabilising influence and almost unflappable temperament. We won’t mention the High Ball.

Was really surprised with our subs, they really didn’t add much and our front row seemed very rusty…

I think this is what tips it to perhaps ending as a whitewash for me. Having all three tests played at sea-level was a huge boost for the Lions even before this result.

Definitely Vermeulen is a huge loss - is back fro the 3rd test though and think that would swing it for the Boks.
