I live in Zuri Unterland, so relatively flat, compared to Switzerland in general. 10% gradient is pretty steep, and do not think there are any hills around my area that steep. Not planning to do any serious cycling, just for a bit of exercise and leisure.

As I am a complete novice my thinking is to get something cheap to try out and see if this is something for me - and I stick to it. If I like it then I can go full "Swiss" and spend CHF 5000.- on a bicycle. The single gear CHF 800.- bike can then be sold at a discount, or be used as a "guest" bike - in any case, I will not end up with a piece of very expensive equipment sitting in my garage.

The bike should arrive next week. I will report back in case it is a total waste of money.
I'm not criticising your choice -I think you made a wise decision financially and bike-wise.
Just don't let the fact that your legs may not be going at a natural cadence for a given speed put you off.

I went up a 10% hill on Sunday - it was average 10% for 5.5Km.

...and typically Swiss. I don't ride an e-bike, but I had constant problems with my car dealership performing unrequested services without asking for my permission, and an oil change suddenly became a CHF1'000 service.

The last time I look my car in for service, I wrote to them in advance and said that I requested an oil change only (and made it explicitly clear that they were not to perform any other part of the "oil service" which is the name of the annual check.) I also left a note in the car to this effect.

Sure enough, came back to discover they had done the full oil service, replaced the wipers, and a few other odds and sods. The bill for my oil change was CHF700. I refused to pay, and asked them to replace all of the old parts at their expense. In the end, they wrote off everything but the oil change that was requested, and I left with a bill for CHF150.
I assume you're going to another garage for the next oil change? I'm asking because I've always wanted to stamp my foot down as you did, maybe a bit more leeway. What I fear is if they get back at me on the next oil change and finding another garage is not always convenient.

Rubbish.
There's a reason there are no front-wheel drive motorbikes on the road.

There were.

If they're good enough for Steve McQueen, they're good enough for the rest of us!

I had a look, and then talked to someone who has one. Basically, Tom's cool Hollywood photos aside, not worth the price. I also spoke with some local shops in the Geneva area, they used to do conversions, but no longer at any of the five I spoke to.

Unfortunately, no - there is only one garage in the area certified to work on my car, so I'm stuck with them. Luckily they're a big enough chain and I see them infrequently enough that they'll hopefully have forgotten me by the next time I visit.

Appreciate the short and concise assessment

I admit I am completely ignorant: since front-wheel drive cars are very common (as is mine) I didn't realize front-wheel drive motorbikes are a problem. Probably something to do with weight distributions...

I decided to go with this one as a starter e-bike. Minimalist bike from an American company. No gears, no fenders, no frills. Cost me CHF 800.00 with shipping (EU VAT subtracted, CH VAT added). Delivery time 7 to 15 days (from Holland).

I can always sell it for a small loss if I do not like it. If I take to e-biking, then I will go the Swiss route and spend a fortune on a bike and gear
