Re: Skiing (snowboarding) 2023

Make it a long week-end and book RbnB for 2 nights. Easy peasy.

Or Grand Hôtel des Rasses, can't get better view, and small ski resort and fabulous xc pistes right there.

I'd be interested to know how many of the tourists are European or from other continents. I'd claim that the overwhelming majority is Northern European. Some specific resorts like Wengen or Gstaad seem to be entirely British while others like Davos more German. Many Benelux and Scandinavians... relatively few others. Some places like St Moritz have their own rules... and Zermatt seems to attract the global crowd.
Going by pre-covid data Swiss tourists make up about half the hotel nights spent during the winter, the rest of Europe is around 1/4 of the total. However this is based on nationality, a relevant share of those Europeans will be Swiss residents so is actually domestic tourism as well.

Of course there are massive differences between the various destinations. You won't find too many non-residents skiing in the Toggenburg valley (north and east of the Walensee), or in Chur Brambüsch.

Wonderful conditions today in Leysin! Sunny and -8C when I arrived, late morning, crisp snow, hardly any people up there.

Re: Skiing (snowboarding) 2023

Update from Andermatt: Friday was awesome, Saturday a bit mixed and Sunday better again - but snow is getting low again. Poor snow levels and really cold temp means very hard compressed runs. I went snow shoe hiking instead.

I was in Andermatt yesterday too had an absolute blast with my board, and again not super busy.

I was shocked at just how cold it was though - I checked at 15:00 and the 'feels like' (with wind chill) was -23 degrees C!!!

Re: Skiing (snowboarding) 2023

Yesterday there was some fantastic skiing in Flumserberg, the odd patch of ice on the shady side in the morning, a touch of clouds rolling through just in time for lunch, but altogether great conditions.

We missed it! I was not convinced the weather would be good and the snow still seemed little so we did not go. Kicking myself now Please tell me it was at least super packed? Anything to feel better

Nope, unless you dared enter the blue run which was overrun with newbies.
It didn't even get to a moguls by 1400on the busy parts. I'll admit that after that time my legs were fried.

I've seen less people there, but I've also seen nearly twice the number of people.
Most lifts were simply skate up to with a few people in front, with the exception of the C3 (Machgenkamm to Prodalp) which was about a 5 minute wait when I was there.
I think the weather down lower put people off, very foggy down lower. You only cleared the fog near Tannenboden on the way up. Some of the best days skiing I've had have been promised bad weather only to turn out nice.

There was a rare weather phenomenon yesterday, affecting the windchill factor. According to:

https://www.20min.ch/story/seltene-w...ktuell-kaum-21

“Today and tomorrow it will be sunny from 1500 meters above sea level, as Meteonews reports. In the mountains, Tuesday and Wednesday are the mildest and sunniest days. The zero-degree limit is about 1600 meters. "That's why Tuesday and Wednesday are great winter sports days," explains Eichmann. Skiers and snowboarders can expect ideal piste conditions on these days before it gets a little colder again”

Re: Skiing (snowboarding) 2023

Anyone been skiing recently in Switzerland? Anywhere that is at least OK conditions? Looking to do a day trip from Basel tomorrow. We normally do Engelberg/Sörenberg/Flumserberg/Andermatt but I don‘t have a lot of faith in the conditions based on the webcams.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/info on conditions.

I was in Grindelwald last weekend, snow was ok until noon or so.

Try and go above 3000m if you want to find some decent snow.

Regardless of snow conditions, weather tomorrow is unlikely to be up to much.

Reckon Flums will be pretty decent from Monday though if forecasts are tolerably accurate.

What are conditions like at the moment? Hoping to go late March as we have a week's time-share to use up at Les Naturelles. Got to wait until new doggie has settled down with us.

Impossible to predict late march yet. In general did Switzerland have the least snow in February since record keeping began... it was also too warm in most parts to produce enough artificial snow... but at least that is currently happening.

With all the fresh snow and cold temps- fabulous conditions in the Alps now, and hopefully for Easter too.

Such as?

Laax seemed half-closed today (and snow conditions "hard, slush")
Where do you recommend for the coming weekend?
