I don't want to beat a dead horse but have been asked a few times privately about the cycling events in Zurich area but thought a public summary would help. I have put a short summary below such that people can hopefully find this summary when they search. Please see the Calendar for the events as below
- There has been one main regular road biking ride scheduled on Thursday evenings usually at 6:30 pm. It is usually organized by myself or Hillseeker and meets somewhere in Zurich when we go to Zuri Oberland or in Thalwil and explores that area usually including Albis Pass
In general, the group is a fairly fit bunch who likes to climbs hills, but this being Zurich hills are hard to avoid. However, the group is pretty welcoming for anyone willing to give the effort and will wait within reason at the top of the major hills.
- Patrickrd has been scheduling (recently) a regular road biking ride on Sunday afternoons in Oerlikon. This is usually 60 to 70 km's over 3 hours with a fair amount of climbing (in the 500 to 900 meter range). I won't comment on the level as I haven't shown up yet.
- There is a regular Tuesday nite Mountain Ride, usually arranged by Eire where they ascend Uetliberg or Zuriberg and come down very fast. Actually, I have no idea on the level but as these are Mountain Bikers you have to be a bit nutso anyhow.
- Other than that there has been the occassional Wednesday rides but these are not regularly scheduled but usually just happen when someone (usually me) can't make the Thursday nite ride.
Other than that, there have been a few additional random events on weekends, which usually involves heading out and hurting ourselves(not literally) on mountain passes, for example a group of us cycled to Klausen Pass to watch the Tour De Switzerland. And someone else organized a two day event in Andermatt where they attacked six of the largest passes in Switzerland (Oberalp, Susten, Grimsel, Furka, Gotthard and Lukmanier)
There has been discussion about adding a lower speed or less climbing ride either to the Thursday ride or at another time. But as of now this has not been formalized.
None of these are offical club rides or the such, just people who set up rides on the calendar. So anyone can feel free to set something up as usual.
Another key point to remember, safety first in any cycling event. When planning a route always keep in mind you will have a group of riders of different abilities and experience, and cars, though better here than some places, are one of the biggest dangers to a cyclist. Thus, some routes may be good for an individual ride but not good for a group ride.
