We are new to Switzerland, and are based in Basel. We are interested in any info on Triathlon clubs in the area. Alternatively, info on running, swimming or cycling, specially during the coming winter months.

As this is your first post - Welcome to the Forum.
Triathlon training - this might help - Triathlon Section of the Swimming Club Basel. They are called the Wildcats I think.
For other swim information see here. Pools, clubs, Masters...
I think there are a couple of other Triathletes about - sneak into the Sports/Activites Forum and look around the cycling sections.
Hope you find what you want.

We're a mixture of runners and triathletes who meet regularly in Basel for a group run. See the calendar for details - next one is tomorrow morning! Would be great to see you...

Is there something similar in Zurich? I've been a runner for years but have decided that some cross-training would be good for me this year. I would like to try a tri, but have no idea how to get prepared, how accepted 1st timers are in local races, and what to do once I've entered. Ideally, I would like to train with a group, preferably English-speakers.
Thanks.

Not exactly answering your question, however there is a fairly large number of avid cyclists on this board that have regular rides in the warmer months. Some of these are endurance atheletes of all ilks including some triatheletes (or wanna be's at least). Keep your eyes peeled to this site for updates.
Alternatively, there are plenty of triathalon clubs in Zurich (not sure any English speaking ones). I don't have a link at the moment if I find one I will post it.

I'm not in Basel, so really I'm of no further help
In Zurich, there are a few:
Tri Club Zurich www.tcz.ch
Tri Club Veloatelier www.triclub-veloatelier.ch
Free Radicals www.freeradicals.ch
My experience has been that most everything is in German, but they are very welcoming of new members and not-so-much-German-speaking people.
You may find some fellow sporty minded people on the forum as well.

Thanks. | | | | | Hey there, well hopefully we will see you sometime soon (once the weather warms a bit!) for one of the cycling outings and maybe some running too... I agree, cross-training is a good thing, plus variety is just more fun!
We've done some tris, my husband more than me, so would be glad to try to help you with some prep trips if we can. We haven't joined any of the tri clubs here ourselves, since we've gotten to know so many great people to train with just thru this forum
By the way Dakman, thanks for plugging the cycling rides here - even from the "other side of the pond"! Hope to see you at one (or many) of them yourself...

Hi Everyone, Just moved to Switzerland and would like to get involved with a local triathlon or cycling club. I'm living in Sarmenstorf near Lenzburg. If anyone knows of the nearest Triathlon club or other clubs that I can join or look in to would appreciate it - thanks. Merry belated Christmas...

Thanks, RetiredInNH, for the link and I have found two clubs. One in Zurich and the other in Dietikon. Both are about 30 to 40 mins away from where I am and it looks like the Zurich Club has English speaking as their website has an English version. If anyone else is interested in the Zurich club here is the website www.triclub-veloatelier.ch |

I was in the same situation a few years ago. Google Tria Basilea. Great group of very motivated triathletes. The Wildcats are the group for kids, and are supported by Tria Basilea. Have fun!

Does anyone know of any Tri or running Clubs or groups around the Maur area (or close to), English speaking, not too serious(!) and welcoming to all standards (mine being steady)? Am moving next week.

Looks like Maur is ony about 11km out of Zurich centre, you could run/swim train with Trigether (previously known as Velo-atelier) for example and then cycle home for an excellent training session :-) They are mostly German speaking members but some (my husband included) manage with English and just a smattering of German!
For not too serious running there are quite a few ZH3 hashers on this forum and their runs are are all over and around Zurich, including often out your way. http://www.zh3.ch
Or check out the running club section of laufkalender: http://www.laufkalender.ch/en/running_clubs.html
