I just found the
2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans page on the Health and Human Services web site. There is an action-oriented shortish paper,
Be Active Your Way: A Guide for Adults paper, and a longer, but non-technical, paper with more details (and notes on special groups),
2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. While the latter is labeled "For policy makers and health professionals" it is easy to read.
It differs from the old Surgeon-General's Report in that it makes it clear that the 30 minutes of moderate activity five times a day is, in a sense, a minimum, and that, by and large, more is better. In fact, many of the examples they give have a target of an hour five times a week. They also come out explicitly and say that one minute of vigorous activity is equivalent to two minutes of moderate activity.
Also interesting is that they state clearly that muscle-strengthening activities should be part of any program. Unfortunately they say essentially nothing about how to set a muscle-strengthening program.
A good read for those interested.
