[Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

I am opening a general purpose thread to coordinate the weekend activities related to Cross Country Skiing.

Classic or Skating.

I don't want to create an event on the calendar, because I think this could be just right for posting messages about our intentions to go XC skiing on weekends to the Einsiedeln Loipe and then not to have to do maintenance to those calendar entries

I'll post here the general info about the XC events and you can then use this thread to coordinate your own XC related activites

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

It was great, we came at 9:30 to the place.

It is just to the side of the Einsiedeln Kloster, they have the "Loipe" there with some 30 km of prepared XC paths.

The "schnupper" lessons that are intended for you when it is your first time, are organised every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 am.

They form 2 groups, one for classic one for skating.

The cost of it is 40 CHF, including the rental of the equipement and 1:30 hours lesson.

We ( xtc and me) took then the 1:30 lesson for classic XC, they took us on the prepared part with the slots and we learned how to move ( 3 different strokes ), stop and climb. The lesson was good, not deep or personalised, but enough for you to get an understanding and end the lesson having a real feel of what it is about.

We then practiced this technique until noon, went for luch with sylvain74 who is an advanced skating XC skier and then met Bartholomew, we took a private 1 hour lesson of the skating style.

the private lesson costs 70 for one person, 80 for 2, 90 for 3 and 100 for 4 to 10 people.

We learned the basic skating technique, excersises to develop the skills and 1 stroke ( there are 4 of them ).

I'd say I got the right feeling of the classic ( even if I find it less interesting) and the basics I need to know for skating.

We ended ( me at least ) skating as ugly ducklings, but knowing what do we have to practice to be able to do it gracefully.

Next weekend I am going there to practice the skating for at least half of one day. As there is an alpine lift just in front I could then do Alpine the rest of the day.

In 2 weeks time we want to get together and probably have another lesson together.

If you are interested in joining. post it here.

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

forgot to say that on monday my whole body hurt... you know the sweet pain when your body is building new muscles ( at least I hope so )

Because indeed you use muscles ( or parts of them ) for this sport that you don't use for cycling or other activities.

Specially I was feeling in in the abductors, the front of my hips ( that you use to push when skating ) hamstrings, back muscles and triceps.

let's hope my body builds them fast so I can be doing it with more pleasure than pain in the near future

Ah, and it was sunny and beautiful, we had a great day.

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

It's a good idea to coordinate a little bit. I plan to go semi-regularly on the week-ends (like 3 times a month), and having some company would be great! Thank you Salsa_Lover for starting this post.

Einsiedeln is quite close to Zurich, well connected by train, with a nice view and with enough skating tracks to make it worth it. It's a bit flat but that should do until the snow melts and we can go cycling

See you on the S13

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

This sunday 8 Feb, etc, Bartholomew, sylvain74 and me are planning to go to the Loipe at the Einsiedeln Kloster for a Nordic skiing day.

The plan is
  • We get together early and go by train ( S2+S13) from Zürich Enge at 8:44, arriving to Einsiedeln at 9:27
  • We get the equipement and practice at the Loipe from 9:30 to 12:00
  • We go for a "meaty" lunch
  • We go back to the Loipe at around 1:30
  • Probably we take a group lesson at 2:00pm
  • We come back to the city having found our center and being in peace with the Cosmos at around 16:00
This plan can change from here to the Sunday but it is the general idea

Louis Wu wanted also to join, so probably he'd also come.

All are welcome.

If you are a complete beginner, there is the possibility to join the group lesson at 10:00, 1 1/2 hours lesson including the rental of the equipment until noon for CHF 40.- 2 groups to chose , classic or skating.

Weather looks ok so far, with a probable snowfall later on the day, let's hope it would get better for Sunday

Sunday

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

This is a great day out. For those who feel a bit apprehensive, don't worry! It's a lovely location and couldn't be easier on the train. Leave the car at home unless you enjoy traffic jams.

Having done this loop a few times I can say it's obviously quieter on weekedays but even on the weekend it's not like an Alpine piste, so beginners shouldn't feel daunted.

Wear layers! Lightweight insulating clothes are necessary, as you work up a sweat. Don't worry if you don't have the kit: some simple thermal underwear and sports pants plus jacket will be fine.

There are lockers available at the rental shack - yes, it's a shack - plus boots and skis to rent. Bring shades

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

Hi there!

Thanks for making this post. Nice to see fellows XC skiers around for once - and not only downhill.

I might join Sunday but I'll have to ask my partner first. We can ski classic reasonably well but want to learn skating - ugly ducklings level 2 Somehow, I start choking as soon as it goes up

Do you plan to take a skating lesson Sunday afternoon?

Cheers!

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

Hello Celine

As we took the beginners lesson 2 weeks ago, we are just going in the morning to practice and then later at 2pm we'll get a second skating lesson.

If you wish you could come and take the beginners lesson, we'll be there around spraining our abductors and falling over our noses.

Then we go together for lunch and you could also come to our private lesson.

I'm PM'ing you my number so you can find us.

I guess it all depends whether "ugly ducklings level 2" fall into the category "beginners"...
Apparently Celine can already skate-ski a bit.

Any advice from those of you that took part in the beginners lesson 2 weeks ago?

In any case, lesson or not, see you all on Sunday

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

I may be up for joining you tomorrow if I can! At least for the afternoon part.

I started skate skiing last year, but am definitely still an ugly duckling or whatever you want to call it - I need more practice, that's for sure! And might like to join the lesson if you do a private one at 2pm.

Yes there was a marathon.

We went there this morning but the weathers wasn't good, fog and snowfall, so I came back ar the end of the morning.

Next weekend would be probably sunny, let's hope.

Re: [Einsiedeln] Cross Country skiing on Weekends

I've been skiing in Rothenthurm lots of times but only on the 7 km trail. My husband goes on the longer ones.

It costs SFr. 7.50 for a day pass. You can rent skis, boots and poles as well (I believe for SFr. 25.--). I know the two brothers who run the place and the one who rents the skis is very nice while the other is known as the "town original." He's harmless though.

It's a beautiful, peaceful area. I'd try it out for a change of scenery.

Great! Yet another place to go skate skiing! Thanks for pointing that out.
It seems to be as accessible as Einsiedeln with public transports and, according to their website, they also have 20-30 kms of tracks.

Anybody fancy going up there this week-end? Or would you rather stick to Einsiedeln so that you can take another lesson with this charming Swiss lady

There are three major places in the Zurich area:

1) Einsielden
2)Rothentrun
3) Studen (near Einsielden)
