Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race [where to see it in Zurich]

Hi All,

the boat race between Oxford and Cambridge is taking place next Sunday (29 March). Do you know if it will be (usually is) shown at any of the Zurich's pubs?
It will be aired on ITV1

Thanks a lot

Re: Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race

not sure if it's in any pubs schedule to show it, but i'm sure the guys at the oliver twist wouldn't mind changing the channel so you can watch it :-D as long as it's not broadcast when a big footbal match is on, actually formula one will be on so if it's around the same time, so you'll need a few fans of the boat race present at the time :-D

F1 or boat race hmmm!

Re: Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race

F1 will be broadcast live on BBC1 from 6am till 9am where as the boat race runs from 2.20pm till 4.30pm on ITV1. I don't think too many pubs will be opening up at 6am to show the F1 but they might be showing the repeat of BBC1's broadcast which runs from 1pm till 3pm.

Thanks for the replies. Just went to Paddy Reilly's and they will show it on one of the smaller screens.

Let's now hope Cambridge wins...

Just wondered if anyone was planning on gathering somewhere to watch Cambridge beat Oxford this year?

Re: Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race [where to see it in Zurich]

The Oxford versus Cambridge University boat race today on the River Thames was a disaster! Soon after the start a swimmer (!!**??) caused Cambridge to swerve out of the way. Then after about 10 minutes the Oxford boat was slightly leading, maybe half a boat length, & steered a collision course. The umpire had warned Oxford twice to change course, but Oxford oars clashed with Cambridge oars and Oxford lost one oar. Oxford appealed to the umpire to stop the race, but the umpire refused. Cambridge won by about 100 meters.

Re: Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race [where to see it in Zurich]

I've just turned my TV off in disgust! I only have the basic TV channels - that is I don't really want a lot of programmes and up until now Eurosport has been a good source of various sports and with a choice of E or D. But since about the beginning of the month the E choice has disappeared. Nevertheless I sat myself down to watch the boat race in German - and, for some (new) reason not live- but turned the thing off when just after Hammersmith Bridge Eurosport inserted a batch of adverts. Watching my two favourites, cycling and tennis, without the E commentary won't be the same thing anymore.

Re: Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race [where to see it in Zurich]

It was shown live on BBC World, which I thought nearly every cable supplier seems to offer.

I was hopping channels when I discovered the boat race, and my post above was not quite correct.

The race started normally, and a swimmer was in the river, the Cambridge oars nearly hit him. The umpire then restarted the race. Later the Oxford boat was slightly ahead and moving too close to the Cambridge boat, the umpire gave Oxford two warnings to move away. There was a clash of oars, and one oar of the Oxford boat broke in half (Or maybe the blade half was separated from the handle half). The Oxford cox appealed to the umpire to restart the race once again. The umpire refused and the race continued. With Oxford missing one oar, they fell further behind Cambridge, and finished in second place.

The mystery swimmer was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace or something similar.

This was the 168th race and is about the oldest sporting competition in the world.

Re: Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race [where to see it in Zurich]

A quick FYI for anyone searching for this topic next year: I was going to be in Winterthur on Sunday and wanted to watch the Boat Race. I emailed the Irish pub there (Paddy O'Brien's) a couple of days before, and they kindly agreed to use one of their TVs to show the race; when we got there, they even offered to put the audio commentary on. Nice place and good Guinness. I'd happily watch there again.

The boat race is great, and having been spanked in every 8s race I partook can fully appreciate how hard it is

Re: Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race [where to see it in Zurich]

Ladies' race:
Some brilliant coxing (steering) by Oxford kept them ahead, and they beat Cambridge by hundreds of meters.
Cambridge steered a conservative route but went through very rough water and almost sunk, but they succeeded in finishing, which in itself was a big achievement.

Men's race:
Good performances by both teams, Cambridge won by about 3 boat lengths.
The wind had become calmer, the water turbulence was still difficult, but the crews probably benefited from watching the earlier ladies' race.
