KAYAKING on Lake Leman

Does anyone know if you can freely kayak on the lake?

Thanks

There are always lots of people rowing at my end of Lac Leman, so I don't see why you couldn't go kayaking. The Kayak CLub in Lausanne would probably be able to give you a more official answer.

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

OK, I just contacted the Swiss Canoe Association (http://www.swisscanoe.ch/site/verband/index.php) and was told that you can kayak freely on the larger Swiss lakes. It is prohibited on some of the smaller lakes if there are environmental concerns for that particular lake. The only requirement is that you have a life jacket with you, which he suggested that you wear rather than stow onboard in case of emergency.

I've been thinking about joining the local rowing club and this thread has renewed my interest in getting out on the water.

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

Kayaking on the lake looks a lot safer than Pedro Olivia's recent world record ride of 127 feet on the Salto Belo Falls in Brazil. I don't know how to upload the video, so I'm including the link with an article about this. If you scroll to the bottom, you'll be able to watch the video. Talk about extreme sports!

I am bringing my kayak and my stand up surfboard (with paddle) to Lausanne with me in 2 weeks. When is the weather agreeable for watersports?

It depends but you can expect a few warm and sunny days in April and May. Same for the end of the summer (september).

No problem.
Wearing a lifejacket is a plus; the name & phone number of the SUP board/kayak's owner must be written on it.

Otherwise no registration or special insurance required.

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

Are there any flat-water clubs near geneva? And is there anybody who wants to buddy up for some kayaking on the lake with a rental canoe (I've got a car and plenty of time)?

I brought my paddle but left the kayak(s) back home in favour for an MTB after lost negotiations...

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

High winds can pick up very quickly on both Leman and Neuchatel Lake, due to proximity of mountains. This can happen extremely fast- so stay close to the sides. I'd say kayaking is much more fun on smaller lakes, like Lac de Joux, Lac St Point (France) lac des Taillères, etc, and on some of the rivers like the Doubs, etc.

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

I just got here and I've been trying to get in touch with the Lausanne Kayak Club with no luck! Any chance one of you might be a member?
My parents are bringing my boat over on friday and I was hoping to join the club and store the boat in their clubhouse!
I only started kayaking last year, mainly easy white water and kayak polo, also considering doing some flat water canoeing on the lake as well.
Need to join a club first, any recommendations?!

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

Hi,

My friend and I will be heading to the Open Canoe Festival over the Easter weekend and will be passing through (detour) Geneva so that we can paddle on Lake Leman.
Do you know if there is a suitable "get-on" either in or very close to Geneva for us to be able to park the car and put our open boat (canoe) on the water?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sean

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

there is a little bar / restaurant just outside of Geneva, called "le reposoir" on the route de lausanne which also has a little park and marina attached.

not sure what the rules are. I'm sure you could drop in there but as with many things in GE you might have to pay.
(perhaps someone else here will know better )

Re: KAYAKING on Lake Leman

If anyone is interested in going kayaking on Lac Leman (Lake Geneva), or playing kayak polo, I paddle frequently from Lausanne and would always be happy to have people to paddle with. Send me a personal message and we can work something out.
Happy paddling!
