Hmm... there is a distinct smell of bovine excrement in here.

Just for clarification Niranjan, I was not suggesting that you don't get a compact, simply suggest you wait a few weeks before investing a lot of money. You may find that there are other things you want to change and then it makes sense to figure out what is the most economic alternative if you are hooked on biking. In this respect be carefull of advice from certain members. The majority of the fitter riders in the group use either triples/conpacts or even a compact with a 32-12 mountain bike block on the back. The one person that is advising you to stick with a standard has never completed a group ride with any sort of an incline and if he could ride the route he suggested in a 39-23 gear, I wager it is not anything like the kind of climb that one usually experiences in Switzerland. Remember we live in the alps, gear accordingly.

Before anyone calls me a hypocrite, yes I do use a standard at the moment, but I will be putting a compact and a 28-11 rear cassete on my bike before the passes open this summer.
Ok, not that I care much about this, but as you are calling me out I'd have to answer.

You say I never completed a group ride with you, but I have only do it with you 2 times.

once as my first hill ride of 2008, the second as the first hilld ride of 2009.

I've gone up to Hirzel with sylvain74 and up to Horgenberg with patrickrd, who then went to do the lake while I continued to Hirzel. both on my standard.

I've riden at least once and many times twice a week with my work colleage whom I met at Thalwil and we come here and then back to Zurich at the end of the day.

I did that on my triple during the spring, early summer08 and then switched to the standard on the late summer 08 after constating that I was fit enough and not using anymore the small ring.

I have nothing to prove to you Eire, I do my sport for my own fitness, go at my pace and have my enjoyment and my suffering.

I see your will to discredit me and show the forum that my opinion is worthless because I am not at your level and you talk as you knew me very well. sending me challenging PMs etc, But the fact is you don't know me, I have seen you probably 4 or 5 times in the past 2 years.
, and the only road biking ones 2 where those first rides.

The fact is, if you want to compare you to me, you and me would have to be in similar conditions, you are probably 10 years younger than me, I would like to see if you at my age can do the same or better than I can. And I sincerelly wish you so.

Otherwise I'll keep taking your banter with humour, but I woulnd't like that people that don't know us, believe all what you post about me here and on the skiing threads.

That's all, end of rant.

now go ride your bikes.

Hmm.. funny how any of the other Thursday rides that you went on (even when I wasn't there) you turned around also as soon as it started to go up, or else you RSVP's yes and didn't even turn up.

I have no problem with you doing what ever it is that you want to do, what I have a problem with is you handing out dodgy advice.

Re: [Zürich] Road Rides on weekends Season 09

My main problem is when people say they are going to show up and don't consistently without contacting anyone. I find this rude and inconsiderate. Sure, it can happen once or twice due to circumstances beyond control.

But anyhow, enough bickering

Hmm... I don't really want to get involved in this rooster fight...

My only contribution will be that any discussion on triple vs compact vs standard that does not involve the Pragelpass (both sides...) is not to be taken seriously...

Litespeed & Dakman did reviews in this guide:
http://www.englishforum.ch/sports-fi...er-thread.html

Wait and be sure it is open as I'm not sure that they clear it as a priority in May.

May may be early...it is a lovely pass, and the climb up the side that Litespeed did, must be hard....as the descent down that side was rather scary, especially when a herd of goats were in the way....

That's a good question. For me the whole point is lost if we use external power to enable cycling. (see pic)

For today's ride, my office is 0.5 km from ETH central and can be used to change/drop stuff.

SEC F2.2
Scheuchzerstrasse 7
8092 Zurich
Phone: +41 44 632 0364

Any other ideas?

Bring it to work, leave it at work? Am I missing something? I am little confused by the question. If there is no secure bike parking that is harder...but the gear question I don't get.

Some people were asking the possibility of parking their office dress/bag etc. near the start point. Since there aren't lockers close to today's start point, I offered place in my office to changeover/leave their stuff and they can pick it up after the ride, as I will do today.

I am not sure what is the source of your confusion. Gear means stuff...apart from toothed wheels...

Oh, okay, I just assumed people could leave things at their own office before jumping on the bike, maybe not always the case.

Well, I live in Horgen, work in Pfaffikon. The ride was leaving from the ETH. Going back to the office was not extremely convenient. I ended up tossing it in a locker at the HB.

Okay, sorry for the questioning, I was just assuming one could leave old work clothes in a gym bag in the office overnight. this assumes everyone owns more than one change of clothes. Anyhow, I will mind my own business....

Yes I have to agree- Pragel Pass is one of our favorites!

Starting from either side is a great experience in its own way. Just please do be careful while descending if going east to west (i.e. from Riedern to Muothal) - there are lots of blind turns on that steep descent.

And yes, if you go in June, you may encounter the annual progression of the sheep and cows up to the Alps - a big Swiss tradition, as we got to experience first-hand with Dakman last year (just be ready to exercise some patience, since the path is not wide enough for all of you!)

Re: [Zürich] Road Rides on weekends Season 09

I agree with hillseeker on the Pragel descent when heading west -- it's probably my least favorite descent around as it's too steep, tight, and blind to enjoy any speed or cornering fun. It's definitely important to take some extra caution when descending that direction. Don't get me wrong, it can still be great fun, it's just not a "tuck and let 'er rip" kind of descent. As a climb though, that side is fantastic -- doable, but with some nice intimidation points, especially in the opening kilometer or so. We seem to always time Pragel with some seasonal migration -- sheep coming up for the summer, cows going down for the winter.

So when are we doing it?

I've done it from the Klontallersee side, but would be interested in doing it from the Brunnen side. We need to find out when it opens.

Anyone up for a long(ish) training ride this weekend? I'd like to get at least 100k in with some hills. I'll go practically anywhere for a good ride. It could be Saturday or Sunday... I'm flexible.

Re: [Zürich] Road Rides on weekends Season 09

I'm toying with the idea of going down to the bottom of the lake and trying the Sattelegg Pass. I think it should be alright as the elevation doesn't get too high and isn't a real mountain pass, but I'm not sure. I can always turn back if I run into snow on the roads or otherwise unacceptable conditions.

Last time I checked, there were only two passes that were still closed in this area (Klausen and Pragel passes).
Anyway, I'm in (as long as there's some decent climbing on the menu...).
