Hiking/Climbing in Berner Oberland
Hi, I'm going to Switzerland for the first time in late June/early July, by myself, and after a few days in Zurich (for work) plan to spend a week and a half in the Berner Oberland. I'd like to do some hiking and maybe climb the Jungfrau and Monch, maybe some others that don't require climbing harder than 5.5 on rock. I was thinking of spending most or all of the time in the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen valley areas.
What I'd like to know is whether it is a good idea to take (i.e. lug) a tent, sleeping bag, stove, and pad, or whether I'd be better off depending on the hut/hotel system. I want to travel economically but can spend around $100/day or so if necessary, and don't want to haul around an extra 15 lbs of gear if I don't need it. Any opinions?
Also, anyone have suggestions for climbs other than the easy routes on the Jungfrau and Monch, in that area, or suggestions for particular hikes, huts, or hotels, or other ideas? Thanks!
Larry
