Exercise but with toddler

Here's my problem. I'm a single mom to a 21 month old who works full-time. I work through lunch so I can get home early enough to spend a maximum amount of time with my son. Since I don't have that much time to spend with him, I'm loathe to give some of that time up to get some exercise.

So I'm wondering if there's others in the same situation based in Zurich who would be interested in figuring out some way to get some exercise with the kids - I guess one of the easiest things would be a regular jog, but as far as I'm concerned, it could just as well be a few of us getting together to do an exercise dvd. You guessed it, a problem which is even bigger is that I'm not very motivated to exercise on my own.

Anyone interested?

Hi

I can't help you by getting together, but I also am a full time working mum, working through lunch for the same reason, my other half works late sometimes and some weekends, so I also found it hard to fit exercise in, I go swimming with my son, and if you find a good swim pool, the childrens section is often deep enough to swim along side, and also, I got the wii console, I find it good fun even alone, and also we do it together, and he has fun, sometimes I don't even have his control on but he thinks it is and loves it. I find it less boring than a dvd, and a workout you don't have to leave the house for. I have never regretted buying it.

I realise it's not the same as human contact, but may fill some winter evenings alone or with friends, and less boring than repetitve dvd's, or swimming you could also do with freinds and there children, you could take turns to have a good swim in the "big pool" while the other stays with the little ones.

Your 21 month year old works full-time? Is that legal in CH?

Re: Exercise but with toddler

You could always try looking for a mother and child gymnastics class - I do one with my 3 year old and she loves it. It's not too strenous for the Mums, but it is exercise, and if you walk or cycle to the class it all helps. Your local commune / gemeinde would probably have the information, or if you can make sense of their website, the FSG / STV should give you links to local clubs (http://www.stv-fsg.ch).

I'd also recommend buying a bike trailer - we bought a CTS Chariot when our daughter was 6 months and it's done literally hundreds of miles. It's great for trips to the parks or shops, and also longer all-day rides. Whilst you miss the close contact of the child seat option, it's more comfortable for the child in poorer weather and doesn't affect the handling of the bike as much. It's certainly a great work out for you!

I have run with my daughter in the stroller (we have a BabyJogger, which is good for running) but to be honest, once she got past 18 months it wasn't much fun. On any sort of uphill I almost ground to a halt as the Jogger with her in was so heavy... Perhaps it'd be better on a flat paved trail than cross country.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!
