Re: Lake Zurich Swim

Having just had a quick look at the web site it seems that you just show up on the day between 3pm and 6:45pm pay your money and go in the water. I would have thought it would be more organised with an official start and stuff, so if I have misunderstood this please feel free to correct me.

We could arrange to meet before and all go and register together and swim across as a group. Make the whole thing a little sociable.

Sounds like a plan, after all that swimming I will definitely need to "rehydrate" afterwards.....

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

Does anyone know if there are restpoints during this swim? not sure i'd make 1.4km in one go but i'd love to do the race.

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I'm not sure about restpoints, but on the website they say that there is a lifeguard or safety but every 75 meters minimal. I would imagine it would be better if you could cover the distance easily in a pool, and be very confident at threading water. Rests may have to be made without actually having something to hold on to, but if all else fails there is definitely help on standby.

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I'm sorry but it's very unlikely that there will be resting points - Supervision will be everywhere though and it's not a shame to abort Of course exercising a bit in 22°C warm water is a good idea!

You have to start in groups, based on your ticket number, so if you want to swim with some Englishforum people, I recommend to buy the tickets all at once.

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I'm in for the relay swim, the lake swim or both.

I swam D1 all through university in the states - but haven't been in the pool for years! I have recently looked into training again. There is a masters team here in Zurich that trains over the lunch hour and monday nights at the downtown 50 m pool. Unfortunately, the woman that runs it says there's only room for more people on Monday night from 6:45-8. I am going this Monday if anyone would like to join me. Otherwise, perhaps we can organize our own training?

I also have a friend from the gym that was interested in doing the lake swim. I'm sure she'd be up for the relay one as well if there is need for another person.

I have vaguely heard that there might be some kind of summer event which involves a swim all the way across the lake.

Google is not my friend at the moment. Anyone heard of such a thing?
There is a Marathon Swim from Rapperswil to Zurich. You will find information on www.srichinmoyraces.org/ch

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

It's not very likely that the water temperature in the middle of the lake will be 21°C or higher on wednesday. The Seeüberquerung probably will be rescheduled to 11.7 or even 22.8... If it happens in August, I'll probably participate! Yay!

Who needs a lake - it's pissing down again so I'll just pop outside, run around a bit, and achieve the same effect....

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

Explains a lot, last week when I went to Seerose we saw some bloke casually out for a bike ride, get off his bike, go get changed on a boat, jump in the lake and swim out for a few hundred metres, then got back on the boat, got changed and rode away

Confused us both at the time but this explains it all

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

greetings to all,

just found the forum today (or refound, I might have come across it some while ago), and was sipping through the threads, quite a community you have going on here!

just wanted to drop in my 2 cents. (or rappen)

I did the lake crossing last year, and I sort of liked it. (i will ellaborate a bit more on that)

To answer some of the worries I saw expressed in the thread: there are boats with lifeguards on every couple of meters, and it is perfectly fine to hold on to them in case you need to rest.

I was also surprised at the number of people that actually went to the crossing (around 3000 or more), and as you can imagine most of the people wont be super athletes or anything, so for those of you who had doubts about making 1.4 kms in the water, rest assured, it is not that hard.

Although I can guarantee that by the end of it you will not be bored sick of swimming in the lake. Last year I made the mistake of signing up as the responsible adult for some 16yr old kids. They assured me they knew how to swim well, and that I could just leave them by themselves.

The problem was that I started imagining the swiss lifeguards seeing the three kids alone (they have different colored caps) with no "adult" around. And since they had my name on the paper, I could just imagine them locking me up for letting the kids swim on their own. So... there I was stuck with three swiss kids like a moma goose on the lake!

I think I wrote enough for my first post!

Anyways I would be happy to go for the (short) lake crossing as well as the long one.
I like adventures and I love the water so count me in!

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

Last summer, 2007, the Seeueberquerung did not happen, due to low temperatures, non-summery weather.

Let's hope this summer is better. The dates for the swim across the lake (closest to Zurich, there are other Seeueberquerungen further down the lake at other times) are:

2. July, with rain dates 9. July and 20. August. First decent day with warm enough water - at least 21 C - will be the day.

For more info see the web site: http://www.seeueberquerung.ch/

The swim across Lake Zurich (the short way) is this Wednesday, and I'm planning on trying it out, so just thought I'd "bump up" this info... Thanks for the write-up from your experience, nyone - That is helpful!

Is that the Tiefenbrunen one? Do you have the info? I often thought about doing this... Not sure how good an idea it would be having not swam in probably a year though!

"Doors" open at 15.00, costs Fr. 20.00 for persons over 16, swimming starts at 16.00 hrs. at the Strandbad Mythenquai. Take Tram No. 7 to "Brunaustrasse", you'll swim to Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen on the other side = 1450 m.
They do have accompanying boats to pick up those close to drowning

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

Here is the website:
http://www.seeueberquerung.ch/

I don't know much else yet, but my Swiss friend said it is a laid-back kind of thing (similar to how nyone described it) where you don't have to swim hard the whole time and can even take breaks. I haven't swam much at all in the past year either, but this seems like a fun way to "jump back in" to it, literally!

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I thought about doing this easy swim next 2 July, but it seems no classification, not a real race also because there is not a mass start.
No one will take you back after the swim, you need to do by yourself. Ok you could think to do another swim back.
All this for 20CHF !?!?!?!?!
It's crazy
I will go swim 2km in the lake alone paying nothing and when I exit I will pay 1/10 for a cola.

ciao

Marco
