... where you don't have to swim hard the whole time and can even take breaks. ..
Hi

just to add my 2 rappen: I did the crossing 2 years ago and yes it is a easy swim were everybody can swim at their own pace, however I didn't expect the waves to be so high, so it is definetly tougher than swimming the same distance in a swimmingpool

the 20CHF are for a Swiss type organization: includes a super sexy swimmcap, the lifeguards and especially that someone brings your clothes to the other side so you don't need to swim back

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

We did the swim across the lake event yesterday (the short way: http://www.seeueberquerung.ch/) and really enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience swimming across but may not have enough experience to do that on their own. This is a good opportunity to do it since they have so many safety measures - boats and lifeguards watching the whole way. Do be prepared for waves though - sometimes they can be significant out there.

I would not recommend it to anyone who is looking for a serious swimming event or race - There are too many people (over 5,000 this year!) to swim around and most people go slowly to "enjoy the experience".

After the swim there was food (risotto included in entry fee) and live music - a nice laid-back party atmosphere.

So if you're interested, mark your calendar for next year -- July 1, 2009

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I really wanted to do this. And I'm a bit miffed that I missed it.
Isn't it usually held in August, or is that because they keep postponing because of lightning threats ?

We were definitely lucky with the weather yesterday. Can't beat laying out in the sun til 8pm! And even after 9 the party was still going strong.

They have alternate dates in case of storming on the originally planned date. For next year the back-up dates are July 8 and Aug 19.

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

The Seeueberquerung was gorgeous on Wednesday. Weather perfect. One of my kids did the Seeschwim, which is 400m on the side where the Seeueberquerung finishes. It was wonderful to relax in the sun after the swim.

For anyone who would like to join in another such event, there are other organized swims across the lake, lots of info about such events on various lakes:
http://www.swimsports.ch/

And in Zürich, there is the Limmatschwimmen on 23. Aug, which is more of a float down the river.
http://www.limmatschwimmen.ch/

Enjoy the wonderful, fresh water! It is so beautiful to swim in the lakes and rivers here in CH!

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

Reminder that the "Seeueberquerung" swim across Lake Zurich is scheduled for this coming Wednesday (July 1st)... If the weather doesn't cooperate then it is rescheduled for later dates.

It was a lot of fun last year - Not an intense, "training" swim - More of a floating social event Breaststroke was definitely more the norm, and recommended in my opinion since there are so many (human) obstacles along the way.

I would set up something for people to meet there, but I'm not totally sure I can make it in time myself. If you go, enjoy!!

I have vaguely heard that there might be some kind of summer event which involves a swim all the way across the lake.

Google is not my friend at the moment. Anyone heard of such a thing?

This in fact is an attempt of the authorities to get it into an organised fashion. I in the past for many times have done the crossing, first with two friend at the age of 17, later alone, out of both Wollishofen and Mythenquai, over to Tiefenbrunnen. When alone, you have to plan it well, take care of all heavy ships, and of course NEVER do so if the weather is critical. The distance is not too long, but you have to bear in mind that parts of the lake have different temperatures. So, in case of doubt, rather take part in the authorized mass-happenings, whenever the totally private way is far more interesting !

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I probably can't make it, but thanks for the update!

It's an unsupervised 1.4 km distance that I personally wouldn't swim alone but then I'm rather risk averse in this regard...

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

The Seeüberquerung (two days ago) from Zürich Mythenquai to Tiefenbrunnen was fantastic! Only not ideal for parents who want to swim across and who have a child who wants to take part in the children's 400 meter swim. I had to leave my son alone at the Tiefenbrunnen side, hurry over to where the main event started, then meet up with him where both swims end together at Tiefenbrunnen. Not a problem in our case, but rather boring for him to wait alone for an hour.

In case anyone missed it, there are still many other chances for similar events. See this site for a list and details:

Happy Swimming!

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I totally agree! There´s a really cool vibe to the whole event, and I will definitely do it again.

Thanks for the link Marasauce. I only knew about the Waedenswil and Kuesnacht ones so this is good to know.

Re: Lake Zurich Swim

I did this and thought it was terrifically organised and a great atmosphere (even if they did run out of bouillon by the time I got to the counter.

Definitely will have another go next year but intend to have a crack at some of the other lake swims around the other lakes in the surrounding area this season.

That's probably because my sister had two instead of just the one allotted to her... make sure you watch out for her at further lake swims, she's ruthless when it comes to bouillon...!
