where to play some pick-up basketball (ZH area)?

Hi everyone

I am currently living in Chicago and I will move to Switzerland later in the year to pursue a new career. Even though I am not that young (38) or tall (6'0), during my years in Chicago one of the things I enjoyed the most was the fitness clubs which all have full-size basketball courts, where it is easy just to join into a pick up game or to shoot ball for practice in between fitness training sessions.

Does anyone know of somewhere in the area of Winterthur where I could just go and practice some basketball and maybe find some people to play pick-up games with?

Even better, does anyone know of a gym (anywhere in CH!) with a basketball court?

I really do not want to lose this important aspect of my life, I know that basketball is not such a big sport in Europe but I hope that there is someone out there that enjoys the game as much as I do...

Re: where to play some pick-up basketball (ZH area)?

Hi, I will start working on April 6. Count me in for the games!

I also enjoy practising (and I practice a lot - about 45/50 minutes of jump-shoooting two or three times a week) - where do you suggest I look for an indoor place to do this? Are there any indoor courts where you can just go and shoot some ball? I remember years ago I went with some friends to play ball in an indoor court in St. Gallen (I used to live in SG before moving to Chicago), I think it was part of the university or something, anyway it was free and open to everyone.

Well, first off, nothing is free in Switzerland!

Second, not that tall? at 6'? Let me tell you from my 5'2 perspective, that's tall.

You can certainly find something at one of the university gyms: http://portal.asvz.ethz.ch/Seiten/default.aspx. They do have open time for certain sports.

Re: where to play some pick-up basketball (ZH area)?

Unfortunately the university gym is open only to "students, alumni, staff and family members". I don't fall in any of these categories...

I need to find a gym where to play ball, preferrably near Winterthur...

Re: where to play some pick-up basketball (ZH area)?

Looking on google maps and streetview (where available) I have identified some pretty good looking basketball courts near high schools in the Winterthur area. To my knowledge these are always open to the public. The problem is, that they are only usable between April and November... I don't think I can play b-ball in the snow

Otherwise, I have found another solution, but we need enough people to make it viable.

The Winterthur City website has a section on sports facilities with a list of all the available public gyms in the city and vicinity. It is very detailed and shows what equipment is available. Most have full size basketball courts.

It is possible to book time slots in any of these gyms directly online. The problem is, booking a 1.5 hours slot (the shortest available) costs 40 francs. If we can get enough people to commit, this is a very good opportunity to play, a 4-on-4 game would only cost 5 francs per person. Booking online is really easy and usually after-office hours are free, the gyms are open until 10 PM.

All those interested please let me know on this thread, and if you have friends who can play try to involve them. The more the better!

I will be in CH starting April 1st. It would be great to have a good b-ball group going by then.
