Spartathlon 250k Race.... healthy?

I was reading a book about the Battle of Thermopylae and reference was made to a messenger who ran the 250 km for Athens to Sparta in under 2 days. I initially thought this was legend, but reference was later made to it's modern version the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartathlon . It's real and some loon has done it in 20 hours, I find that astounding

I appreciate the dedication, and mental and phyiscal prowess that must be needed to complete this sort of thing, but is it healthy? I hate the thought of driving that far, so on foot is a non-starter for me, but surely the stress of pounding roads for that distance must do damage to joints etc.

Re: Spartathlon 250k Race.... healty?

One would think it would be terribly unhealthy and not nearly as pleasurable as kicking back with a Lugavulin 25yr and a Trinidad.
