We are members of www.lifetimefitness.com/Alpharetta and pay $110 per month for a family membership. I think thats great due to all the amenities it offers.
Sorry to say, there will not be anything at all in Switzerland that could compare to Lifetime Fitness. I miss that gym.

I don't have children, but I heard in a nearby suburb of Basel there is a great indoor water park for kids & adults. It's similar to what Lifetime has in terms of pool, etc.

But Switzerland has other lovely things for you & your family to look forward to.

We just checked this out and signed up!! Hope it turns out OK!!! Not sure what the 9.90 per week (as advertised) gave you but we signed up for 59.90 per month all inclusive; no time restrictions. Maybe 9.90 was for 'off peak'?

Apparently the 150 cfr discount for the 1st 200 was for the joining fee, which gives you 2 sessions with a personal trainer. We were within the first 200. Not sure if there are better deals to be had if you try but we were happy with the fees. It is half the price of the City Gym (practically next door) and is brand new, beautiful facility, gorgeous steam/sauna/relaxation area, a nice room for classes and another dedicated room for spin classes. It is twice the price of the Fitmade near aldi but that doesn't include the sauna/steam and classes!!!!

It is not open yet - I think he is hoping for a grand opening the week of the 21t of Feb but is going to let people who have joined in advance come and use the cardio machines as of next week. Classes will start a few weeks later; yoga not til April.

There was also something he said about next year only costing 49.90 cfr for the whole year!!!! Not sure if this is just for the first 200 people??? I'm not sure where we will be in a year so that wasn't a big deal for us but its worth checking out if you plan to be here for a while.

I'll give a report back once it opens.

Has anyone else signed up??

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Just having a look for gyms in the area... hope you don't mind me adding a question here!

Does anyone who goes to FitnessPlus on Dornacherstrasse know generally how busy it gets at lunch/after work? Not opening until 8 probably scuppers going pre-work for me? I know it's a tricky question, but any tips would be appreciated

I also like the sound of the Radisson blu one... similar question would apply about busyness - Biff, is it still a peaceful haven for you?!

Cheers!

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

I use formhaus on Güterstrasse 90, just behind the SBB it's cheap 95 month for 1 year subscription, even cheaper if you join for 2 years. It's on 3 levels, downstairs free weights ground floor machine weights and a cardio weight circuit thing (don't know the name, migros wellness have the same thing) and upstairs is changing rooms, sauna, cardio. As I say it's a small gym but always relatively quiet so no hassle doing what you want to do. Max number of people that have being there when i was was 8.

You should check it out if you live in the gundeli area, or even if you don't. It's brand new (a few months) new machines etc..

Thanks Travnett!
Looks good... so long as someone was there to go over the high-tec bits of that training system, and they don't mind people doing their own thing too

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

I have found a gym just over the border in Effringen-Kirchen, it is small and old and the machines have a high milage.
I admit I quite like it, the real old school grunt and sweat Muckibude, you can realy get your freak on making the machines glow in the dark, they have a great set of free weights and the price is 50 Euros for a 10er card or eight Euros a single.
Here is a sugguestion: I have room for four in the motor, if anybody fancies we could make a date and I will pick up at the railway station in Effringen-Kirchen, only a 10 minute ride from Basel Badischer and I will drive back to Basel.
Any takers give me a PM.

That sounds like the plot line from 'The Expenables', I have a feeling the girl wants to do a couple of aerobics classes, not bench press 500kg of rusted iron in a dingy basement next to heavily perspiring refrigerator shaped men.

A great idea and a kind offer, but I'm not sure I'd fit in with the 'old school grunt and sweat', and I'm really looking for somewhere nearby to go to regularly.
Although, glow in the dark machines sound pretty cool... I'm imagining a disco theme, which is probably a bit much to hope for

Hehe. Not sure about aerobics as such, but somewhere near and non-intimidating for sure, and 500 kg... nae chance

Ha! Ha! They glow in the dark from friction and a lack of WD-40.

Hi Jacki
I had a tour around fitnessplus in gundeli today & really liked it especially as they have a kinderhort for my 2 boys & they offer Les Mills classes.
I plan on signing up with them early next week so I can start to shed the baby weight! They are allowing me to pay in 3 installments & I think they also have day rates. It's also worth checking with your health insurance as Swica are paying 50% of my membership.
I can only go to the gym in the mornings (when the creche is open) but if you would like to join me then please send me a message.
Happy gym hunting!

That's great to know!!! I love the Les Mills classes. They are about the only thing that keeps me motivated to go to the gym.

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Anyone have an opinion on Bodymove near Dreispitz, particularly compared to Fitnessplus? Bodymove looks great from the website and like it has greater choice of classes than Fitnessplus. I will pootle down and take a look at both, but Bodymove's not been mentioned in this thread, so any experience anyone has to share would help. I have to play myself at the psychology/guilt game - it's on my bus route home from work - I'm more likely to go if I get guilted into it

No they don't mind you doing you own thing, you can get a program if you like but you don't have too.

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

I just saw that I never gave an update on the gym i joined since it opened. I joined Factoer-sport on Rebgasse in Kleinbasel.

http://www.fs-club.ch/

It is new, beautiful, spacious, good equipment and friendly staff. Very nice sauna and steam room although I have to admit I don't use it because I am a bit of a prude and prefer swimsuits - and I don't think that's the norm!! (2 days a week though the steam/sauna is ladies only).

It was about 60 chf a month - not sure if that was introductory only or if that is still the price.

The best thing for us are the classes - we never need to use the gym equipment. We do spin 2 or 3 times a week and I do zumba twice a week.

Only negative is that there is no air conditioning. One day we turned up for spin and the bikes were moved outside into the courtyard!

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Whatever you do avoid Formhaus in Basel. It's a small and inadequate gym near the SBB in Gundeli with indifferent staff and limited kit. I joined last year on the back of a promotion, but stopped using it. I'd accepted that I had lost the subscription fee, but thought I wouldn't renew when invited. It doesn't work that way. To my horror, the first I heard from them since they took my money last year, and two days after my subscription expired they sent me a bill for another year and told me I should have cancelled over a month ago. I probably should have kept a record of the expiry date and anticipated something like this, because I've heard of this type of rip-off in Switzerland before, but I thought i would have at least got notice. Anway, they are adamant I owe them over 1000 Sfr for a year's membership of a gym I wouldn't dream of re-joining.

that applies for nearly everything in CH so it shouldnt be a surprise - for the gyms its 1 month before , for insurance etc its 3 months before

Before you decide, go for an intro session at CrossFit Basel. It's completely different from any other gym, and the owners are awesome. If you go, tell them James from Canada sent you

Best,

James
