Whatever you do avoid Formhaus in Basel. It's a small and inadequate gym near the SBB in Gundeli with indifferent staff and limited kit. I joined last year on the back of a promotion, but stopped using it. I'd accepted that I had lost the subscription fee, but thought I wouldn't renew when invited. It doesn't work that way. To my horror, the first I heard from them since they took my money last year, and two days after my subscription expired they sent me a bill for another year and told me I should have cancelled over a month ago. I probably should have kept a record of the expiry date and anticipated something like this, because I've heard of this type of rip-off in Switzerland before, but I thought i would have at least got notice. Anway, they are adamant I owe them over 1000 Sfr for a year's membership of a gym I wouldn't dream of re-joining.
I have to second what rob1 has said. Any subscriptions in basel be it phone. internet, gym etc have an automatic renewal process at the end of your subscription (they are not obliged to contact you before your renewal). That means that you are tied to another 12 months contract with the usual 3 or 1 month notice period to cancel. I understand that in the uk/Ireland it is different in so far as after your initial 1yr subscription you can cancel at the end of any month after that. In the majority of cases that isn't the norm here in Switzerland.

Although it can seem harsh I don't think you can do anything other than pay up the money and count it as a learning experience which you can apply to all your other obligations in Switzerland e.g Phone, internet etc..

I just canceled my membership with Formhaus successfully by sending them a letter 3 months before my renewal date.

170 i pay 90 and thats all in with as many classes as I want!
in city gesundheit ?

I pay 135/month for full access. I actually do not care about the classes but only the gym and I thought their prices were high (even though the gym is nice and people friendly).

Has anyone visited or tried out the new FitMade Gym in Basel?
Impressions? Experiences?
Just throwing in my 5 rappen...

We just joined FitMade in Basel yesterday - we did a tour of most of the gyms over the past week or so and the difference in cost is amazing. The concept is a bit "EasyJet" - low cost for the basic service, everything else costs. 2 chf for a shower, no child minding, no fitness programmes developed for you, no classes. But when you realise that the difference in price is around CHF700 per year (CHF400 for FitMade vs c CHF1100 average for the rest), that's a lot of money to spend on things that certainly we rarely use.

If you are fairly self sufficient, and don't need Zumba or spinning classes or the like, it seems like a really good price, and the gym is very spacious and airy with better opening hours than the others.

We just checked this out and signed up!! Hope it turns out OK!!! Not sure what the 9.90 per week (as advertised) gave you but we signed up for 59.90 per month all inclusive; no time restrictions. Maybe 9.90 was for 'off peak'?

Apparently the 150 cfr discount for the 1st 200 was for the joining fee, which gives you 2 sessions with a personal trainer. We were within the first 200. Not sure if there are better deals to be had if you try but we were happy with the fees. It is half the price of the City Gym (practically next door) and is brand new, beautiful facility, gorgeous steam/sauna/relaxation area, a nice room for classes and another dedicated room for spin classes. It is twice the price of the Fitmade near aldi but that doesn't include the sauna/steam and classes!!!!

Has anyone else signed up?
?
NO! We felt like we needed a shower upon leaving! Creepy guy showed us around - not "here is the solarium" but "here is the room you go if you'd like to be black" with a salacious grin. Lots of tiny rooms with one or two pieces of kit and guys staring at each other. A dark "relaxation room" with loungers and things for "those times when your body just doesn't want to work hard".

Just a weird place, I thought

We LOVE Factor Sport!! (see link above) Been there since the day they opened nearly 2 years ago. The main gym is one Huge room with tonnes of equipment - not lots of tiny rooms with 'one or two' pieces of kit (if that even is the same gym that you visited?). The manager/owner is great - his english is far from perfect so maybe something was lost in translation, but he always makes an effort to speak to us in english as do all the other staff. He knew my husband was a cyclist and encouraged him to get his spinning qualification and he now teaches a spin class there once a week! Moving to Basel was very difficult and the great people we met at Factor Sport made the transition so much easier - I would highly recommend it!!

Downstairs is the big room, right? Where the big neon tunnel heads down to the large darkened room?

The upstairs is the darkened relaxation room with the porn style loungers, and the smaller equipment room ("this room is for your abs only")

Anyway.....glad you like it there. Its good to know its not what we thought it was

Hi Just to say I ended up joining City- Gesundheits Gym which is on Rebgasse 20 between Wettsteinplatz and Claraplatz. Thay where probably the most friendly, cleanist and easy to deal with. I managed to get a monthly membership for 170 chf and I can do as many classes etc as I want and use the gym during all opening times. They have lots of classes and they seemed the most varied , I did visit all other gym's in the end but this was the best for me. I had an hour's induction yesterday and then did 1 hr's pilates which was excellent, the instructor even did most of the class in English. Today I am off to Body Combat and Body Bump so hopefully the experience will be just as fun and good !
Cool.. I wanted to check them out but too far for me to trek for a work out.

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Dear All,

This topic helped me a lot. Thanks for your valuable comments!

I am looking for a gym with classes (yoga, zumba, spinning), which also start after 7pm and would like to pay less than 110/month. Perfect solution would be the monthly payment.

It seems that FACTOR SPORT-CLUB http://www.fs-club.ch/ would be the perfect fit to my preferences.

Do you have any recent feedback? Do you visit the above mentioned classes? Is there anything to know before I sign up?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Cheers,
Vixy

We've been using the Gym since the day it opened and really like it. It has an average number of classes - bigger gyms have more (like city next door) but for the price it is really good. After 7pm you can do Zumba (tues, wed, thurs) and spinning (mon, wed, fri). My husband teaches the Wednesday class - in English. They only just added yoga and there is one class in the afternoon and one at about 5:30pm. If you go into reception they have a pile of class schedules on the counter - you can take a copy.

I used to go to Zumba but on Tuesdays we practice that weeks spin session, we spin on wednesday and I need thursday off. But there is a consistent following for the guy on Tues and Wednesday - he's a bit fast but he does break down the steps. There is a new teacher on Thursday and I haven't been yet.

I think if you want to try the classes you need to take a days membership - about 20CHF but you can use the equipment, do a class and use the sauna/steam area which is really nice.

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and I am coming to Basel in one month, so excited!

Thanks for all the comments about a gym in town, I am actually seeking a fitness center with high quality cardio equipment ideally with a car parking (I am travelling very frequently by car for work). I looked at al the websites and sent some emails, but still I haven't found any. I was wondering if any of you had the same need.

Thank you and... hope to meet you in Basel!

I just canceled my membership with Formhaus successfully by sending them a letter 3 months before my renewal date.
But make sure you send it recorded delivery - Formhaus claimed not to have received my cancellation, but I had a proof of receipt. Didn't stop them being ungracious, but stopped them stinging me for a service I didn't want.

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ? STAY AWAY FROM FSC Basel!!!

Stay away from Forum Sports Club Basel!!! They will continue to charge you regardless of whether or not you move outside the 40km zone or even to a different country! This has happened to at least 4 other people I know. When i signed up i was a student already living outside the 40km zone, but i would work 3 days a week in Basel. I specifically asked what would happen when my work contract would run out and i would no longer be travelling to Basel or even afford the membership and was advised that since i was already outside the zone i would just need a letter of employment termination. After presenting the required documents i was shocked to receive a letter stating that i still had to pay for a full year's membership (another 6months!). My only option was to move further away, which i did! and they still want me to pay!! This gym is beyond a joke and i regret not asking around beforehand because so many people i have talked to have mentioned that they had the same problem....STAY AWAY FROM THIS GYM THEY ARE THIEVES!!!! Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Hi! All the recommendations and tips are great! Thank you!
Well, I use to wake up around 6:00 am and do outdoor exercises (jogging, calisthenics, boxing, etc) by myself.

Since I'm new in a cold country, it is very difficult for me to go out to workout at the park and if I don't exercise early morning (between 6:00 and 7:30 am), the most probable is that I can´t exercise on the day (work, family, so on).

Does anyone know a gym with opening hours before 8:00 am?

Thank you for your help and tips!

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Don't know what kind of fitness gyms you all are looking for but if you really want to work your butt off in a group course for 1 hour, try the classes at IFP Basel. It's run by two younger, nice guys who both speak english and they get some serious results! They're located near the FC Basel Joeggeli stadium. Classes are reasonably priced when compared to most other gyms. This is not for relaxing or going to the spa, however... this is purely for getting a full body, no nonsense, hard core, functional workout that leaves you knackered... expect to be sore for a couple days, as well! :-)

Does anybody know the prices for Forum Sports Club at the Johanniterbrücke? They don't mention them on the website.

I'm late, but don't forget that health insurances pay back up to CHF 200 if you join a gym that is recognized by them. Discount gyms aren't.

Re: Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Not all health insurance plans. We have Assura and they do not reimburse for gym memberships.

I just joined Swiss Training (Vogesenstrasse 87, 4056 Basel) for 540 chf for a year. Plus, they are having a special, so I get 2 more months for free.

Its a good place: clean, friendly, not new but in decent condition. Has solar, sauna, fitness classes and, of course, weights
