Thinking of it, I think skiing through trees is defo not encouraged because of damage to trees and disturbance to wildlife- same as skidos are strictly controlled.

I hate this argument. Cause we all know how vast and wide open the wilderness is here in Switzerland. And the wildlife has NEVER seen or been disturbed by human presence so we MUST protect this at ALL costs. We have certain no-go areas in Colorado due to elk migrating paths. (these areas are the best powder spots, he-he) I have never seen elk migrating through 6 feet of snow and everybody knows they migrate before the season and after the season but never in the middle of a ski season. And as far as protecting trees, those things have hurt me a lot worse than I have hurt them. And those log slides in the B.C video I posted were all constucted using fallen trees, we dont cut live trees.

Really? I was groaned at for posting a ski and snowboard movie? Are we 13 years old? Someone get their feelings hurt? Ahhhh, here's a teddy bear and a twix to make you feel better.

Sorry, I didn't realize we had a film critic here. I know its not Oscar winning stuff but come on. Its a ski movie.

Well then you should groan at all the new carving skis as they are shaped with a snowboard sidecut. If it wasnt for snowboarding you wouldnt have carving skis.

Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Going to hit the slopes tomorrow, but Engelberg, my closest resort only has 12ks open, on the glacier.

Anyone know if a close resort which currently has a few more runs open?

Cheers

This freaks me out. POV video of avalanche burial and rescue.
Now that I am a father I think my backcountry explorations will be cut down a bit. But then again........ It all depends on how well trained the people you go with are. If they are not, then dont go. Thats my new motto.

I'm not sure anywhere close will be better than Engelberg. Diavolezza and Saas-Fee are probably the best alternatives just now. I wouldn't be surprised if you can ski off the glacier at Engelberg off-piste down the Laub or on the trail down to Stand. personally being a weekend and given the snow conditions I wouldn't be surprised if the runs are open down to Trübsee, but maybe it's worth giving the resort or the ski school there a call?

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

I'm curious:

I have a bit of a Hoch Ybrig fetish, and I've been wondering whether I couldn't store my skiis and boots there during the season. Doesn't someone, somewhere have an offer like that?

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Hm. Snow. I suppose it can't be helped, got to go get some practice in Engelberg

Only problem is - this is the first time one actually lives sort of close to the slopes, and the first time one does a day trip. One realizes one doesn't have the slightest clue what to do about the extra gear.

Do they let you leave your shoes and maybe a bag with snacks or water somewhere, say a rentals shop? Or are there lockers near the cable station?

Suggestions appreciated!

Bit late for you now, but Andermatt had two t-bars, a chair lift, and two gondolas open today when I was there. Conditions weren't the best (well, the free-ride stuff was pretty good, if you're into that) but it was quite ok. Plus they've got the UBS deal, where all UBS customers can get a buy one get one free discount on lift tickets for the next couple weeks.

There are lockers at the train station in Engelberg which is about a 5 minute walk from the cable cars. The majority of people however seem to just take a backpack up on the mountain and stash it outside a restaurant, hotel, etc.,...

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Fair enough, a pair of shoes wouldn't be the most enticing loot even to those foreign barbarians. =) I'll grab an old extra backpack and see how that works.

Now, to dig the snow gear out of the boxes...

I also rate the "Activity Workshop" site but it hasn't been updated for a while.
Yeah, there's a good reason for that. The author (that's me) left Switzerland

But the way things are looking at the moment, I may well be moving back in the next few months, so I'll be able to update at least some of the info on there before the Winter is over!

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Flumserberg were a bit sneaky (or negligent) and only updated the German version of their website, saying that they were open this weekend, and daily from tomorrow. The S2 train is also running there (normally it terminates at Ziegelbrücke) on weekends.

Was there this weekend - enough slopes were open, but not all, and it was not too busy yet.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Did a half day at Flumserberg last Saturday - perfect morning and although still early season conditions with branches and crap poking out every so often, was totally worth it on soft new snow. S2 ran to Unterterzen, very convenient. No queues whatsoever. Quite a bit of the mountain was open, actually.

Agree on the Flumserberg experience - great conditions and no people! A friend went to Laax for the weekend and came down early Sunday as only three runs were open and the crowds were massive...
