Agree on the Flumserberg experience - great conditions and no people! A friend went to Laax for the weekend and came down early Sunday as only three runs were open and the crowds were massive...
This is why I avoid going to the big resorts in early season. We call this the "White Ribbon of Death" Three runs of man made ice with 3,000 people.
And on a positive note Dani Albrecht may actually compete this weekend. The birds of prey is his favorite course and he knows it quite well. According to his father Martin his confidence on the birds of prey is better than on any other course, and confidence is what he needs the most right now. But I would still rather see Bode win it.
GO BODEEEEEEEE!

According to Bode, he does not like the added turns in this years DH. I have to aggree with him on this point. DH should be wide open where the skiers can let it rip.
So, who got some good snow action last week-end? Would love to hear about it - got a stinking cold, so did not venture out.
BTW, I know people get fed up with Migros Cumulus card - BUT they snow card, with which you can book ahead for most resorts on line - ensure you don't have to queue in the resort - but also give very good discounts for some resorts- -25% now for Zermatt for instance according to Migros magazine (sent to you free if you have a card).

Lots of the Jura resorts were open - we were in Les Rousses, skiing was really really good, almost no-one there as well. Doesn't look like the lower down slopes will stay open long though, lashing rain at the moment, so likely this was a one weekend wonder...
yep - raining here in the Jura. Our local resorts are Metabief/Mont d'Or (on map Les Hopitaux Neufs/Jougne) on the French side, and La Robella (Buttes NE) Les Rasses (St Croix VD) on Swiss side. All had a great time at the week-end- but sadly it's all over for a bit.
Maybe we should get a Le Jura ski/snowboard/crosscountry group going, and meet up?
Davos great - especially after 14:00 on Sunday when the wind came in, blew fresh snow onto the pistes and everyone left. Hopefully some more runs open up this weekend.
Wallis was great (Alentsch Arena) Cold Fluffy snow, not enough to be considered "champagne" but the closest I have ever found here in Switzerland. No wind either. GREAT first weekend.
Here's a question...where would you recommend this weekend for a complete beginner, and a semi-beginner in Valais (we're in St-Maurice, near Martigny)? E.g. Are there any "baby" slopes open yet? We'd like to start slowly
Limited choice this weekend, but one personal favourite that is open in Valais is Leukerbad. The Erli area is open at weekends now and is great for beginners and the main Torrent slopes have some pleasant blues - although you will probably need to take the Torrentbahn back down as the runs down to the resort are a little more challenging. And you can always soothe your aching limbs at the spas afterwards. I've stayed at the Hotel Chamoix Garni there, it's a pleasant and convenient little b&b.
The Aletsch area is also open and it has some nice easy slopes. From Bettmeralp you can take blues right from a vantage point over the glacier.
Incidentally Villars opens next week I think, and on the 18th all skiing there is free! It's a good resort for beginners and popular with the Brits.
Looking forward to getting out this weekend after 10 days in Asia. Thinking Flumserberg on Sunday. Have never been, and figure its good to get it done with early in the season before everyone starts skiing there in January.
Will be skiing with a novice who wants to stick to blue runs and can't make heads or tails of piste map on the web. Any suggestions on which lifts to focus on are greatly appreciated.
We might be heading to Flums this Sunday too. I'll also be with a friend who hasn't skied in a while so will mainly be sticking to easy runs. The first chair lift after cable car up at Tannenboden is usually fairly busy but if you head further up to the top and back end of the resort there are usually some red runs that are a little emptier. May see you there - unfort no Swiss Wall type runs but there is a black run (at Leist) I've been meaning to try bet you thought you'd never hear those words come out of my mouth

For Flumserberg I enjoyed practising and learning snowboarding there from Prodkamm down to the eight seater and repete. The slope is really wide, there is a good mix, and they vary from the right to left side. Basically a good mix for someone learning, but fun for someone who knows how to board.
Good luck - it is currently snowing around Obersee so conditions look ideal

I think "Chrüz" will be a good start for your novice. "Prodkamm" is a longer run but does have a wee steeper part in the beginning that can scare someone who is not assured.
As this person gets more assurance, it is easier to try other runs from "Chrüz".

Also if you head up to the Tannenboden side there are a few nursery runs off to the left hand side (just up from the iglu bar) which are good for confidence building before heading up to the blue run at Chrüz.
