| | Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011 | Quote: | | | | | Hey you're arriving at the perfect time for winter ski season! One good option is Flumsberg, direct train from Zurich and about 90min journey. Nice and easy with ok ski area for a start | | | | | Certainly not on a weekend!
There are literally hundreds of resorts within 90mins of Zurich. The vast majority of them better and with less crowds than Flumserberg. Why does every keep recommending a resort that Zurich empties itself to so that you spend a day in lift lines or in danger of somebody out of control barrelling into you.
Make the effort go a small bit further, it pays off.

Not quite sure how RWD can handle on narrow Glarus's roads without snow chains though... Will give it a try or do I need ones?
The shots are safely hidden inside the Snow Hound's repository and won't view daily light |

The ghost hunting seemed to be quite rewarding though - one could practice stability and control. Never skied in such a large group before and on very narrow pistes.

Elm could well be a goer then |

Elm is a pretty good resort I like it a lot... But, they don't seem to have everything open at the moment (at least anytime I've checked their website over the last few days). Also it's somewhere that needs a fair bit of snow for cover and they are only saying that they have 10-40cm of snow. The slf site has a measuring station nearby at an altitude close to the top of the resort and that is giving 58cm of snow.
In general some of the slopes are quite a bit steeper than other some other areas and the run down to the valley is narrow, icy and closed at the moment!
It might be worth a try to see how it really is right now, but I don't think it will be as good as the resort can be. On the plus side it should be fairly uncrowded (relatively speaking) but expect some moderately steep and icy pistes.
I'm currently thinking of checking out somewhere like Malbun (never been there before so no idea how it is) based on the current weather forecasts I'm seeing.

I thought it was more of a rugby and drinking day as visibility was so bad it was deemed to be safer in the bar!! |

I don't know if there is any local ski tuition, but it would probably be aimed at a Swiss German speaking audience I suspect. Wengen is a much better bet for beginners.

It's not a big resort, but it's easy to get to (half an hour by bus from Brig, with buses twice an hour), not crowded at weekends and with a good range of runs including a lot of accessible off-piste. |
