Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Had great cross country sking today at Les Rasses, blue sky, sunshine - so beautiful.

Hopefully tonights's decision on whether to run this weekend MARA will be positive.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

It will be a difficult decision- the race at Les Cernets had to be cancelled 2 weeks ago - and it then snowed all week-end, just too late. Were the runs pisted? We went to Les Rasses/Les Cluds the other day, and their were not. Great to hear you enjoyed it and are still in one piece.

Looking at visiting either Verbier or Crans-Montana this weekend (from Zurich). Have to get my boots looked at and these are the only Swiss locations of the shop I used (Grrrr....).

Skied in Verbier tons of times, but never Crans-Montana, anyone been there? If yes what are your impressions.

I know it's a long way but will just do a day-trip unless I can find some cheap accomadation (open to suggestions/recommendations).

Cheers
I love Crans (pronounced Kra) and I think it has a great mix of terrain, but the south-facing slopes really do soak up the sun. Great place to get to early, ski hard, lunch late and sit in a deck chair for the afternoon enjoying the perfect views. Bit of a hassle by public transport to get to, but not impossible for a day trip from Zurich if you don't mind catching the first train.

Will be driving rather than taking the train (although will check out this option too, as coming back tired with tons of traffic will not be fun). Will probably do Verbier though but not quite decided yet. Trying to reach a friend in Neuchatel so maybe I can stop over on the way down.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Be careful wherever you go - another killed in Crans the other day by an off piste avalanche. We just love the Verbier area but always stay in Nendaz - cheaper, more friendly- by car go straight up to Siviez (well signposted at entrance to village) and then up to Tortin, Lac de Vaux, Col des Gentiannes (great place for lunch at the Cabane). If your budget stretches to it, Le Mont Rouge in Nendaz is a great gourmet but not chichi place for dinner - otherwise Hotel Mont Fort opposite is good too. (used to be Le Sourire before).

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Had a great day in Lenk 2 weekends ago, some great pistes for intermediate skiers. Very little snow off-pisten at the time, but apparently they had 2-days worth last week and there's lots of fresh powder about.

Thanks for the info. Been to Verbier loads of times, including a 1 month Holiday there . Have to go back to where I bought my boots from either in Verbier or Crans... Will probably do it as a day trip by car as reasonable accomadation is hard to find, especially as the school holiday is not over yet. Could of course delay the trip a week, but with no Rugby or F1 this weekend, would be a good time to go.

Not sure about Valais, but skied Vaud, Bernese Oberland, Central and Eastern Switzerland in the last 10 days and the picture is pretty consistent. Lower south-facing slopes are often totally skied out/closed but slopes are generally good above 2000m whilst sheltered pistes between 1-2000m are variable, sometimes a little bare and icy in the morning (and slushy in the afternoon) but generally OK.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Hi,

I am staying in Zurich, Dietikon to be exact. Any recommendation of near skifields for beginners? I've been to Brunni but would want to try a few more places before I hit the high and big ones and I understand that quite a few skifields are closing due to end of season. I will be grateful for any suggestion.

Thanks!!!!

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Couple of friends went to Verbier on Wednesday - right at the top it was fine, but very soupy at the bottom, and of course, no off piste at the mo.

Glacier 3000 was pretty good today - fresh snow and powder off-piste at the top - fresh tracks for early risers

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Flims was disappointing - none of the upper pistes on the Nagens side had been made - and they were exceptionally moguled.

The Grauberg run was great at 1130 - well half of it was until it got very heavy - but fast.

The free ride off the front of La Siala was cut up badly - but provided the best run of the day.

All in, not a bad day - but hardly good either - and with Flims prices

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Was in Zermatt on Saturday and over all tue middle slopes on the Matterhorn and the runs down from Gornergrat were fantastic. We spent most of last week in Saas Fee and it was OK but Zermatt was better.

Going to Champery/Les Crosets on Saturday for a week. What are the conditions like at the moment at the top? Will be staying in Champoussin, normally ski in/ski out - but not this time!

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Parsenn has been fantastic for the last 2 days. Saturday softened earlier and was quite busy - but today the place was deserted.

I was the first person off the train and down the front run at 0825 this morning. Great except for the zero visibility.

It cleared later on and the pistes were in superb condition

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Was in St Moritz this past weekend. Friday night snowboarding was garbage, as the Corvatsch piste was just one big ice patch. However, the snow was still great in Corviglia the next two days, despite the 15 degree temps. It was only slushy near the bottom station, otherwise the majority of the runs had great spring conditions.
