Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Much as I would love to join the social in Zurich, it's a bit of a hike from Basel. Any takers for a pre-season ski social in Basel?

Would be great to meet up with other snow lovers near Neuchatel too - skiers, snowboarders or xcountry.

Sunny and warm week-end- grey this am - now total white-out up here in the Jura. Snow settling fast.

I would be down! Do you think it will be enough to snowboard this weekend?

don't think any of the Jura resorts will be opened soon- but will post here if I hear anything. Head up for Zinal or Verbier for now.

Have you ever been to the Jura yet? Got 3 resorts within short distance here, La Robella, StCroix/Les Rasses on Swiss side, and Metabief/Jougne on French side + Les Fourgs.

Nope I just arrived in September and my only trip to the Juras was to hike the Dole in October. I bought a snowboard a week ago and am really eager to get out on it, although I might need a lesson. I definitely want to go to Verbier but think I might enjoy it more if I go elsewhere first and get the hang of turning better. They have organized ski weekends here for students to Diablerets just about every weekend so I need to take advantage of that. I think they're relatively cheap too, 125 CHF for a 2 days of ski and lessons, lodging, breakfast and dinner. I unfortunately didn't sign up in time for the only trip to Verbier

Does anybody know which angle is best to sharpen your skis if you do not know the manufacturer recommendation? My research has fallen into two categories - by ski model or by snow type?
I use 1 on the base and 2 on the sides. I'm not much of a piste skier so haven't really experimented with different angles. I can definitely tell the difference between a fresh tune and no tune though, especially this time of year.

It's not that hard to do your own if you have the equipment. This link is a good knowledge base: TOGNAR

Here's a place that you can order some tools: Telemark Pyrenees

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Alright that sounds good. The last time I went was 4 years ago and I wasn't quite able to connect turns but was able to do both heelside and toeside turns so hopefully I haven't lost that ability and I can make fast progress in a lesson! I haven't even been snowboarding on mountains either; just really big hills! So that alone is enough to keep me up at night! I'm thinking it might be better to wait until I get better to go to Verbier so I can appreciate it more. That said, is Zinal much more expensive than Verbier? Are there any cheap hostels there?

Are there any other cheap places near Lausanne that will be open the weekend of the 24th or 4th with cheap lodging? I know the season is just getting under way but I'm dying to go out!

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

This time of year makes me a bit sad as there is only one place on earth I would like to be. Prepairing the Birds of Prey Downhill course in Beaver Creek.
I miss mountain ops. Funest, hardest, most dangerous and lowest paying job I have ever had. Loved every minute of it.

World cup in Beaver Creek Dec. 3-5

I was there when Bode became the first American to win on U.S soil, then swapped places with Ralvy the next year. Special moments indeed.
P.S This course is SICK on a powder day.

So are we all set for a couple of pre ski brews tomorrow? Obviously hugely disappointed that Papa G can not make it.

Yesterday in Central Switzerland:

Wet, heavy and not too deep (15-20 cm and hitting cowshit on every other turn) but still fun.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2010/2011

Those who live in Lausanne, where is the best place to go to hire ski equipment? Roughly for a day the cost or for a season and what i would need to buy first rather than rent.
Never skiied before so it's all new to me. Will have to be options that are accessible via public transport. Suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Birds of Prey Downhill course in Beaver Creek.
Most people know B.C only because of this. What they don`t know is what`s in the trees. A few of my friends produced and crashed in this video. Don`t scorp it. lol

Crash scenes.

Signed up to go to Les Diablerets with UNIL yesterday. I'm pumped! I'm going for a weekend in December and again for 5 days in January as a sort of "camp."
