The hosting provider - http://www.melbournestatus.co.uk/ - they use was having networking issues.
The moderator team visited them on their annual team event. Everything went well until a certain moderator explained the provider how they could optimize their servers, like he did on that other forum he moderated...

You mean the guy that started this thread? It's a good job upstarts like him were removed for more wholesome content

At least no other mods shamelessly jumped on his coattails once he'd gone!

You have an interesting take on reading comprehension.

Iirc no one was "removed for more wholesome content".

I personally think all three members I mentioned were very much a valuable part of this forum.

If the forum was best served having them as moderators is another discussion.

Errrr, yes he was removed as a moderator. I don't see anyone else stepping forward organizing such undertakings. Had to look up your KFC reference and it appears the same guy was bussing groups of people to France for KFC, I assume when there was a larger active membership.

So patently more valuable as a moderator than not being around at all. Ironic actually now all the dust has settled, the sum total from last year's moderator cull is simply the reduction of about a third of active users. The moderation is actually quite good now, however that was the case also before the cull, not sure how much that has got to do with some moderators being largely absent though

Well I can tell you as someone who has been on this forum long enough to get that reference, that there has always been drama, there probably always will be but somehow this forum perseveres when all other alternatives seem to run out of steam pretty quickly.

I think if you took off those rose-tinted spectacles, you'll find that a fair number of users left before the moderator change*. That was one of the reasons for the moderator change.

*Cull really isn't the right word to use here.

Yes, the forum will continue to plod along I'm sure. With continued competition from the likes of Glocals, Reddit and Facebook groups, one wonders for how long. With so few active users now it's hard to not to see that losing contributors like Mr lost_inbroad is a net loss for the forum though. For the only reason as far as I can see was his politics, and ultimately to what benefit?

Tbf I only remember our friend EdwinNL, and it's not like there's been a flock of new returning members since the change.

Re: What happened?

People have been predicting the demise of EF since before I became a member. It's still here. People come and go. Software and server glitches happen. This latest outage is nothing more exciting than that, it seems.
